Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Management Division, is recruiting for
Scale Operators who operate a platform scale, classify waste material, and determine and collect waste disposal fees at County disposal sites.
Duties may include the following:
- Weigh vehicles at the entrance, determine refuse classification, apply fees, prohibit unacceptable waste, record data, and collect fees through cash, customer accounts or credit cards. Also issue receipts and determine tare weight.
- Maintain scale by daily calibration, keep the weigh station orderly, report malfunctions promptly.
- Enforce regulations, refuse entry to non-compliant patrons, prevent unauthorized salvaging; provide courteous assistance.
- Manage site opening and closing, clear patrons, secure the area; balance daily cash, prepare reports and deposits.
- Manage traffic during busy times, address stalled vehicles, report accidents, complete necessary forms.
- Answer public inquiries regarding fees, hours, site openings, and provide directions over the phone.

Benefits By Occupation al Unit: Craft, Labor, and Trades CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Availability: Positions are subject to emergency call backs and will be assigned to various work locations throughout the County without advance notice. Incumbents will be scheduled for rotating shifts, which include weekends and holidays, and must be available for overtime as needed by the Division.
Interested candidates must indicate availability on the application and in the Supplemental Questionnaire.Travel: A valid California Class C driver license is required at time of appointment and must be maintained. Employees in this class are required to use their personal vehicles and must show proof of automobile liability insurance. Employees are compensated in accordance with County and department policies for mileage incurred during the course of work.Employees will be required to drive in extreme weather conditions and to various disposal sites.
Assignment: Candidate must be willing to accept assignments at any disposal site within the County.
Physical: Employees regularly walk, stand, bend, squat and occasionally work near equipment on rough, uneven, rocky or slippery surfaces. Employees are exposed to dust, vehicle emissions, noise, odors and extremes in temperature and humidity.
Pre-Employment Process: Incumbents must successfully pass a physical, background check, and drug test prior to appointment.

Minimum RequirementsExperience: O ne (1) year of (full-time equivalent) cashiering or bookkeeping experience, which includes extensive public contact.
-AND-Shift: Must be available to work rotating shifts; indicate availability on the application and in the Supplemental Questionnaire.
Desired QualificationsCandidates with computer skills in Word, Excel, and Outlook and file management experience are highly desired.
