    The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Grain Inspection and Warehousing Division has a flexible schedule, part-time Quality Sampler position in Kansas City, MO.

    Employees in this position serve a critical front-line role in the foundation of Missouri’s grain market. Employees inspect carriers prior to loading of grain, obtain grain samples and perform basic technician functions in order to aid in establishing the value of that grain. The work of this position is primarily in the field (at grain loading sites) but does have some in-office duties.

    Employees in this position are expected to have reliable transportation to the office in Raytown, MO, but will have access to a state vehicle for transportation to work sites from there.

    Scheduling

    Employees in this position are expected to work at least 1 full-day shift, typically between 6 am - 6 pm, Monday - Friday, with some variability. Shifts may be available up to 5 days a week if the employee is available & there is a business need.Other work may also be available (other times and/or other locations) if the employee excels at this position and has interest in additional work.

    • Receive on-the-job training in the FGIS grain & commodity sampling procedures
    • Inspect primarily shipping containers and railcars to ensure they are in proper condition for loading and free from leaks, odors and infestation
    • Obtain representative samples of grain
    • Observe and verify the weighing of carriers by grain company employees
    • Complete work records legibly, accurately, and efficiently
    • Maintain vehicles, sampling and lab equipment, and work environments properly
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, grain businesses, others in the grain trade and the general public
    • Perform other related work as assigned


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Possess a valid Missouri Driver's License
    • Possess a high school diploma or GED/equivalent. Work experience may be substituted for deficiency in the required education.
    • At least 18 years old


    Physical Considerations

    Employees in this position must be able to:

    • Regularly work in a grain elevator environment that may include factors such as loud noise, foul air, grain dust, inclement weather, extreme heights and moving machinery
    • Regularly work in enclosed spaces (shipping containers) for short periods to inspect the carrier for damage
    • Distinguish subtle differences in color
    • Detect subtle changes in odor
    • Occasionally work from heights, including the ability to climb stairs and ladders
    • Frequently lift a minimum of 15 pounds, and occasionally lift 50 pounds to a height of five feet with reasonable accommodations
    • Sit or stand for extended periods (several hours)


    Special Requirements

    • Adapt to variable work schedules that include nights, weekends and holidays, and that are subject to change with little notice
    • Have consistent & reliable means of communication (mobile phone)
    • Have consistent & reliable means of transportation, including occasionally in inclement weather
    • Ability to obtain USDA/FGIS licenses to sample and process grain within established timeframes
    • Employees in this position may be ineligible for hire if they, their spouse, their minor children, or any relative immediately residing in their household is employed by or otherwise receives direct or indirect financial consideration from any grain elevator or warehouse, or engage in the merchandising, storage, commercial transportation, or other commercial handling of grain. If applicable, this relationship must be disclosed prior to hire.


    Lack of post-secondary education will not be used as the sole basis denying consideration to any applicant.

    Compensation

    • Base rate of $17.55/hr + 1.5x overtime pay
    • +$2.00/hr for hours worked outside of normal business hours
    • +$5.00/hr for qualifying work on shuttle trains
    • Paid twice per month
    • Paid on-the-job training


    Schedule

    • Multiple positions open immediately
    • Flexible scheduling options available; supervisors work with employees based on their availability
    • Many shifts are typically between 6 am - 6 pm, Monday - Friday with extended hours and weekend shift options common through peak season (fall harvest)


    This position cannot exceed 1000 hours annually.
