    The Missouri State Public Defender is dedicated to providing legal representation to individuals who cannot afford an attorney in criminal cases. Our mission is to ensure fair and just legal proceedings for all citizens. We are looking for a motivated and organized individual to join our team as a Purchasing Inventory Specialist with a working title of Financial Specialist. In this entry-level technical and professional role, you will be an essential part of our team, managing the purchasing and inventory process for the agency. You’ll enjoy working with local offices, vendors, and various departments, ensuring a smooth purchasing process, maintaining accurate records, and assisting with financial tasks. Your work will support the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our organization, contributing to our mission of providing quality legal defense.

    Purchasing Program Management:

    • Facilitate the purchasing process for the Department based on state regulations and agency policy.
    • Prepare and evaluate bids, proposals, and quotations received.
    • Maintain official contract files and all purchasing documentation.
    • Establish service contracts and handle logistics for purchased equipment and supplies.
    • Consult with vendors to resolve contract or purchasing-related issues.


    Inventory Management:

    • Maintain and reconcile inventory records and coordinate physical inventories at offices.
    • Process and track IT-related purchases and inventory.
    • Process and reconcile fixed assets.


    Financial Support:

    • Process accounts receivable to include: preparing a weekly deposit, monitor and process on-line payments, complete SAMII documents, and maintain all records related to accounts receivable.
    • Maintain the Lien and Recoupment database to include: applying payments from clients, monitoring negative balances, issuing client receipts when requested, process spouse apportionment requests.
    • Take calls from clients concerning fees due
    • Review and process employee expense reports in accordance with established MSPD travel policy and procedures.
    • Review and process retainer fee invoices.
    • Perform other financial duties as assigned.


    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, or a closely related field.
    • Progressively responsible work experience in related areas may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
    • Experience with the State of Missouri purchasing processes is a plus.
    • Four years of clerical or support services work, including responsibilities for purchasing and/or inventory.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
    • Strong organizational and attention to detail skills.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
