The City of Murrieta is accepting applications for the position of
Senior Recreation Coordinator to fill one (1) current vacancies in our
Community Services Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to one (1) year.
POSITION The Community Services Department is seeking a high-energy and extremely motivated candidate to assist with an expanding portfolio of special events, both City and privately hosted, for the enjoyment of the Murrieta community. This position will assist the Special Events Supervisor to ensure that community-based events are of the highest quality. Will help coordinate all facets of special events, assist external organizers of events, manage vendors, and ensure best practices of risk management are being implemented in a fast-paced environment. A candidate must be well-organized and possess sound knowledge of event planning. Excellent communication and attention to detail skills are vital in this role. Must have a demonstrated passion for the community and delivering programs that lead to a higher quality of life.
DEFINITION Under general supervision, plans, organizes, coordinates, and provides direction and oversight for the City’s community events including from project initiation to post-event follow-up. Support all aspects of events which bring family, cultural and social significance to the community. Identify event themes and resource needs; coordinates the use of City facilities for internal/external events; provides administrative support and program assistance to the Recreation Supervisor; and performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives direction from the Recreation Supervisor. Exercises technical and functional direction and provides training to lower-level staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is the advanced-journey level classification in the Recreation Coordinator series responsible for performing the most complex work assigned to the series. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in the classification rely on experience and judgment to perform a wide variety of tasks in developing and implementing community events. Assignments are given with general guidelines, and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to complete assignments. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Coordinator by the scope and complexity of the programs to which positions are assigned.
This class is distinguished from the Recreation Supervisor in that the latter is the full supervisory-level class and has overall program, budgetary, and administrative responsibility for multiple recreation activities and facilities or a comprehensive recreational program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
- Plans, develops and implements recreation programs, activities, and/or systems at one or multiple sites. Facilities include, but are not limited to, the Murrieta Youth Center, California Oaks Sports Park pool, California Oaks Sports Park skatepark, and various athletic fields and courts throughout the City
- Manages the day-to-day operations of one or more recreation programs and/or facilities; undertakes opening and closing procedures; sets up and tears down facilities throughout the day for different activities; inspects facilities for potential hazards
- Interacts with the public to assist them with recreation class registrations; receives and responds to questions and concerns; authorizes late withdrawals and entries in classes and issues refunds and credits consistent with departmental policy
- Coordinates and prepares marketing materials for programs; compiles information for Rec 1 or other online class registration software; writes press releases; uses social media to reach the broad community; maintains and updates the website to ensure event information is updated and accurate; prepares flyers and brochures
- Works with instructors of various classes; prepares weekly and daily schedules; creates promotional materials; verifies and sends payment requests to the Finance Department
- Manages and coordinates program activity for adult sports, youth sports field allocations, aquatics, and youth-related programs and activities at the Murrieta Youth Center; performs registration work; receives and accounts for fees received; ensures the upkeep of equipment, supplies, and facilities; performs field preparation; organizes staff to keep score and run the game clock
- Oversees the Youth Advisory Committee; Manages and coordinates the recruitment and selection of committee body per the by-laws and provides recommendations; provides supervision, training, orientation, and guidance to assigned committee members; oversees scheduling and monitoring of volunteering
- Manages the selection, scheduling, and assignment of work to part-time seasonal and volunteer workers; trains in work activities as needed
- Manages program marketing and communication in such areas as contributions to the Activity Guide, preparing flyers and brochures, and using social media to reach a wide range of community participants.
- Orders supplies and materials for projects and activities as authorized by supervisor; maintains records of purchase orders
- Monitors the proper and safe use of program facilities by patrons; patrols recreational facilities to ensure adherence to rules and ordinances; ensures that incident and accident situations are properly responded to, handled, and documented
- Assists with training staff in the use of the automated software system for registrations and program fees; oversees registration activities and ensures accurate record-keeping for program receipts
- Estimates costs of supplies and materials; orders supplies and materials for projects and activities; maintains records of purchase orders
- Maintains accurate records of recreation services, including schedules, program participation, and related activities
- Accepts security deposits and payments for internal and external programs; follows up on billing for field allocation
- Under the supervisor’s direction, oversees assigned recreation coordinators and part-time staff
- Assists in the recruitment and selection of staff and provides recommendations; provides supervision, training, orientation, and guidance to assigned part-time staff; oversees scheduling and monitoring of volunteers
- Observes and complies with all City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.

Minimum QualificationsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) and
- Two (2) years of recreation coordinator or higher program operational experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - Possession or ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Driver's License
- CPR and First Aid Certification for infant, child, and adult, and AED Certificate within three (3) months of hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and/or recreational facility setting and use standard office and/or recreation equipment, including a computer, to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various City, recreation, and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Standing and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier weights, in all cases, with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees work in the field where they are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, and inclement weather conditions; when rendering first aid or CPR, employees may be exposed to blood and bodily fluids. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

- RETIREMENT : The City participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
- Tier 1 (Classic Members hired prior to 12/30/2012)
- Final Compensation: Highest twelve (12) consecutive month period
- Member Contribution: 8.0% of compensation
- Formula: 2.7% at 55
- Tier 2 (Classic Members hired on or after 12/30/2012)
- Formula: 2.0% at 60
- Member Contribution: 7.0% of compensation
- Final Compensation: Highest thirty-six (36) consecutive month period
- Tier 3 (New Members)
- Formula: 2.0% at 62
- Member Contribution: 50% of normal cost (currently 8.0% of compensation)
- Final Compensation: Highest thirty-six (36) consecutive month period
- MEDICAL INSURANCE : The City contributes up to $1,891.28 per month toward medical insurance for employees and their eligible dependents.

- DENTAL INSURANCE : The City pays for 100% of the premium for the employee and their eligible dependents.
- VISION INSURANCE : The City pays for 100% of the premium for the employee and their eligible dependents.
- LIFE INSURANCE : The City pays 100% of the premium for a $50,000 life insurance policy. Additional life insurance is available.
- SHORT-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE: The City pays 100% of the premium for the employee.
- LONG-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE : The City pays 100% of the premium for the employee.
- DEFERRED COMPENSATION : Employees are eligible to participate in a deferred compensation plan through Nationwide Retirement Solutions. The City shall contribute a matching amount not to exceed $2,000 per year.
- SPANISH LANGUAGE PAY : 2.5% of base pay for eligible members of the association who are fluent in Spanish. Eligibility is based on business necessity.
