    Description

    The Mental Health Assessment Specialist is responsible for completing mental health intake assessments and follow up assessments for individuals confined in the Denton County Jail. The employee is responsible for completing inmate patient mental health records and clinical profiles within County guidelines. The employee also provides individual and group counseling services.

    Examples of Duties

    Performs specialized detention work in the care and security of inmates to ensure their constitutional rights and welfare are safeguarded in the County Jail.

    Provides confidential evaluations of inmate and crisis counseling as needed for inmates, either during or after office hours.

    Conducts suicide screening and prevention.

    Responds to inmate request forms or staff requests in a timely manner. Researches information in order to answer requests; keeps health and legal records of inmates.

    Responds to additional assignments from supervisors.

    Provides thorough documentation.

    Regular and punctual attendance is required.

    Assists physicians and completes physician consultations for necessary health information and clinical care direction as needed.

    Transcribes physician orders and processes care plan directions.

    Performs mental health assessments on inmates and documents clinical care plans, special needs orders, and actions taken; creates patient charts, and maintains files and records as needed.

    Interviews, evaluates, and examines inmates for clinically indicated needs of care or intervention, and monitors for progress or degenerative changes in condition.

    Makes clinical recommendations to place and remove inmates from Protocols of Self Harm and Suicide Prevention.

    Monitors and reviews laboratory values for therapeutic medication maintenance and initiates physician evaluation as clinically indicated.

    Prepares and assist with inmate patient discharge planning on release to other agencies or reentry into the community, including networking and coordinating with community providers and resources necessary for continuity of care.

    Performs other related duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in human service field or other related field as required to qualify as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) and minimum 1 year prior experience in a mental health field or counseling experience required.

    Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) or Licensed Social Worker (LSW) preferred.
