    Job Description

    SUMMARY: Under general supervision, monitors facilities and waste hauling trucks regarding waste and grease traps; provides work direction to Pretreatment Technician staff.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Provides work direction to pretreatment technical staff; assigns and reviews work.

    • Monitors facility grease and grit traps.

    • Monitors waste trucks to ensure they are within allowable ranges.

    • Interacts with waste haulers and waste companies to ensure required procedures are followed.

    • Issues notices of violations regarding non-compliance with City ordinances and/or state rules and regulations.

    • Maintains and updates an automated compliance schedule for all facilities.

    • Prepares various daily, monthly and annual reports for City and state requirements.

    • Maintains various required activity records.

    • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

    • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    Knowledge:

    • City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.

    • Sewer collection and grease trap operations.

    • Wastewater facility operations.

    • City ordinances.

    • TCEQ requirements.

    • Federal EPA regulations.

    • Principles and practices of effective employee supervision.

    • Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.

    Skill in:

    • Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.

    • Using various testing equipment.

    • Using hand tools.

    • Providing efficient customer service.

    • Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.

    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.

    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    High School diploma or equivalent; AND three years’ experience in pretreatment operations, including one year of supervisory or lead work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

    • Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
    Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds.

    Compensation Range

    $58,271-$87,407
