    $27.12 - $32.97 / Hour

    THE POSITION:

    Under minimal supervision, performs maintenance, repairs and overhauls of the City’s light and/or heavy equipment including trucks, construction equipment, automobiles, fire vehicles, police vehicles, small engine equipment, refuse vehicles, street sweepers, generators, recycling equipment, and similar equipment; and performs other duties as required.

    Representative Duties

    THE POSITION:

    Under minimal supervision, performs maintenance, repairs and overhauls of the City’s light and/or heavy equipment including trucks, construction equipment, automobiles, fire vehicles, police vehicles, small engine equipment, refuse vehicles, street sweepers, generators, recycling equipment, and similar equipment; and performs other duties as required.

    The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of the position's essential duties. They are descriptive, not limiting. Essential Duties: Diagnoses, inspects, maintains, and repairs all City equipment from bumper to bumper and attachments using best available practices and following all safety procedures. Diagnoses and performs major and minor repairs. Performs shop and field inspections to determine repair needs, estimate time and cost of repairs; and make repairs as needed within established time standards. Installs, replaces, and repairs a variety of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and aftermarket parts and devices. Performs welding, fabricating, and modifications as needed. Utilizes all diagnostic equipment such as scanners and laptops to perform repairs, programming, and updates as needed to complete the repair. Updates and maintains equipment records. Monitors and communicates parts and supplies for equipment repairs and facility needs. Ensures parts ordered are received and processed correctly. Assists and trains personnel. Maintains a clean work area and assists with the cleaning of shop areas and equipment. Provides exceptional customer service to those contacted in the course of work.     Minimum Qualifications

    Applications will be accepted only from those applicants who clearly demonstrate on the COMPLETED application & supplemental questionnaire that they meet the below requirements:
    • Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test; AND
    • Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and/or equipment. OR
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described job duties. Successful completion of appropriate trade school or technical course work in related area may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.
    • Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license. A Class “B” California driver's license must be obtained within the six month probationary period. Some positions may be required to possess a valid smog license. May require certain State certifications or licenses as needed to perform job duties.
    • Must provide own tools as per established guidelines.

    HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
    • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications

    EXAMINATION: ORAL APPRAISAL INTERVIEW (Weighted 100%): (Tentative)

    An appraisal will be made of the applicant's experience, education, training, certification, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal qualifications for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

    NOTE: Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination.     • Blue & White Miscellaneous Unit

    VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
    1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
    5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
    14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

    VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
    1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
    5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
    16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

    HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

    SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

    ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.

    INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).

    RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement websitefor additional information.
