    DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is seeking qualified candidates interested in applying for an unclassified Nature Center Educator - Recreation Leader Specialist V (non-career) position at the El Dorado Nature Center. This position acts as naturalist staff for the Visitors Center and Educational Programs. The successful candidate will possess strong customer service and public relations skills, as well as a desire to teach the public about the Nature Center and local environments.

    The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part-time staff and a budget of $85 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.

    The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.

    Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Prepare and give educational tours to school youth groups.
    • Teach youth summer camps and family night walks.
    • Assist with Visitor Center operations and daily customer service.
    • Help prepare special events onsite and offsite.
    • Assist with grounds maintenance and trails projects.
    • Assist with zoo animals, wildlife rescue, and education.
    • Performs related duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    This position is open to all candidates meeting the following minimum qualifications:
    • Experience working or volunteering at a Nature Center, Museum, Zoo, or similar public setting.
    • Experience with public speaking.
    • Experience working with children and diverse groups of people.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Course study in environmental sciences, biology, zoology, or park naturalist is highly desirable.
    • Basic computer skills required, with knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook highly desired.
    The successful candidate will possess the following:
    • Public relations skills.
    • Strong time management skills.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational and customer service skills.
    • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions, walk for up to two miles on uneven surfaces, kneel, stoop, bend, lift up to 20 lbs., and stand for long periods of time.
    • Willingness to work a flexible schedule.
