    DESCRIPTION

    Salary Information:

    Grade I - $1,660.16 - $2,265.76 Bi-Weekly

    Grade II - $1,743.60 - $2,384.48 Bi-Weekly

    Grade III - $1,924.56 - $2,627.44 Bi-Weekly

    Vacancy Information: Current vacancy is with the Utilities Department. Future vacancies may occur in the Health & Human Services Department.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Under immediate supervision assists laboratory personnel in performing physical and chemical tests; cleans and sterilizes laboratory work surfaces and supplies; operates and maintains laboratory equipment; maintains supply inventory; maintains field instruments' performance and daily calibration; cleans and prepares sample bottles with the appropriate preservatives and collects water samples from citywide sampling sites for water quality testing; performs selected and required field analyses; maintains chain of custody and sample integrity until relinquished to lab staff; enters field data into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); assists in the preparation and updating of record keeping; data entry of routine reports; may receive training and/or perform standardized bacteriological, physical, and chemical tests for examination of water samples as permitted under law; complies with safety rules; and performs related duties as required.

    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    Candidates must meet the following requirements in option A or B:

    Option A. Nine units of college-level laboratory science courses in basic biology, chemistry, microbiology or closely related field (proof required)*.

    OR

    Option B. One year of recent full-time equivalent paid experience working in a public health laboratory or comparable laboratory.

    *Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Any proofs submitted must contain either the applicant's name or other identifying characteristic on the form. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, basic materials and equipment including those used in biology and chemistry labs;
    • Ability to follow detailed procedures in a multi-tasking environment;
    • Ability to prepare laboratory reagents, media, solutions, and assemble simple laboratory apparatus;
    • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment;
    • Ability to interpret technical information and keep accurate records;
    • Ability to work independently and as a team member;
    • Ability to use a computer, including the knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Office;
    • Ability to perform field tests and color analyses.


    Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and/or during health emergencies as needed.

    A valid driver's license will be required at time of appointment.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Water Treatment Operator and/or Water Distribution Operator certificates issued by the State of California and/or a Water Quality Laboratory Analyst certification issued by the California Water Environment Association, or the American Water Works Association are desirable for some positions.

    Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran’s Credit will be placed on the eligible list first and then in the order in which applications were filed. The resulting eligible list remain in effect for at least one year. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
