Minimum Qualifications
Four (4) years of full-time experience in painting under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in painting at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.
Duties Description
As a Trades Specialist (Painter), duties include, but are not limited to:
• Performs journey-level painting work.
• Supervises others in preparing surfaces and applying coats of paint, varnish, and other finishes.
• Stains to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces and fixtures of buildings, structures, furniture, equipment, and materials.
• Orders the kind, quality, and quantity of paint to be used from measurements of areas to be painted.
• Assembles materials, tools, and equipment required to accomplish the work.
• Erects scaffolding or ladders as needed.
• Fills nail holes, cracks, or joints with putty, plaster, or other filler and otherwise prepares surfaces for painting using a variety of tools and materials including sandpaper, brushes, or steel wool, and if required, removes paints using paint remover or scraper.
• Uses premixed paints or prepares paint to match specified colors by mixing the required portions of pigment, oil, and thinners.
• Paints surfaces using brush, spray gun, paint roller, or mittens.
• Stripes parking lots using striping equipment.
• May supervise subordinate staff, including semiskilled and unskilled workers, and provide training and instruction to staff.
• Perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods.

OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to work at heights from ladders, scaffolding, or bucket truck.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
• Will be expected to attend scaffolding user and erector training, provided by the agency.
• Will be expected to be trained and fitted for a respirator, provided by the agency.
• Will be expected to attend the training course, Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair, and Painting, or an acceptable equivalent, provided by the agency.

Location Pay:
The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($48,956) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($59,757) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400).
