This is professional nursing work in the care and treatment of patients or residents in a facility of the Missouri Division of Youth Services. This position performs a variety of nursing functions; conducts or assists in the development of nursing assessments and health care plans, implementing health care plans, instructing residents and patients in performing personal health care, and performing preventative nursing care.
The following tasks are the responsibility of the Registered Nurse:
- Provide physical examinations, perform nursing assessments, schedule sick calls and lab work, and review all medical complaints, injury reports, and physicians’ orders.
- Maintain an ongoing awareness of youths' health care needs and coordinate the provision of services.
- Establish, review, monitor, and maintain medical and medication logs, reports, and files.
- Stay abreast of new developments, research, and treatment techniques that will meet the needs of youth.
- Teach and monitor the implementation of new information throughout the program.
- Conduct CPR and First Aid classes for youth and staff. Obtain and maintain certification as American Red Cross and First Aid Instructor, HIV Counseling and Testing Certification.
- Oversee and review the work and documentation of LPNs, nurse assistants, and other technical personnel.
- RN’s may provide public health services to members of a community such as assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and/or case management; or may oversee other RN’s on a shift.
- RN’s are accountable for incident reporting and investigation and observing the provision of medical care provided to patients by facility staff.
- Provide health care and hygiene instruction to youth, staff, and families, promoting health, prevention and management of illness, injury, and special health needs.
- Dispense medications to youth.
- Transport and escort youth in everyday and emergency situations.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, skills & abilitiesIn addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of current professional nursing theory, practices, and standards. Ability to administer detailed therapeutic prescriptions under general professional supervision. Ability to supervise, evaluate, and instruct professional and paraprofessional nursing staff.
Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Missouri or in accordance with Missouri’s Nurse Licensure compact
and 0-3 years of experience as a registered nurse.
(A graduate of an accredited nursing program may practice as a graduate nurse until he/she has received the results of the first licensure examination taken by the nurse or until ninety (90) days after graduation, whichever first occurs.)
Pursuant to State Law, this position requires accreditation, licensure, and/or professional or occupational license which is only available to holders of specific post-secondary degrees.
Special Requirement: Possession of a valid vehicle driver’s license.
