Description
The Shift Leader performs professional detention correction work supervising juveniles placed in detention by the courts. Work involves supervising juveniles in detention facilities to ensure their safety and welfare, and transporting juveniles between jails, medical institutions, schools, etc. The employee is also responsible for providing supervision of line staff in the absence of a shift supervisor while continuing to function as a Juvenile Supervision Officer.
Examples of Duties
Ensures safety, welfare, and security of detained juveniles through compliance with all established laws, policies, and procedures.
Trains staff on approved de-escalation and restraint methods and techniques.
Conducts security checks and ensures all security checks are completed properly.
Conducts fire drills and other necessary safety drills; ensures drills are conducted in a safe and efficient way.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Directs, supervises, and advises the Juvenile Supervision Officers.
Represents the department and county in interaction with outside persons, including the general public, other counties, and other departments.
Reviews incident and restraint reports; makes recommendations based on reports as necessary.
Enters work order requests as necessary, ensuring work is completed in a timely manner.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED and a minimum one year of experience in a related field. Internships may be counted toward meeting one year's experience based on actual hours completed when the duties performed were related to the field of juvenile justice; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
Juvenile Supervision Officer Certification by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department required.
Possession of a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas driver's license within 90 days.
Officer must meet the requirements in Title 37, Chapters 343 & 344 of the Texas Administrative Code including but not limited to being of good moral character and at least 21 years of age.
Must be able to pass a State Criminal History background check.
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required.
