JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Crossing Guard unit and supervision of assigned staff.

Representative Duties

Supervises, selects, trains, monitors and evaluates crossing guard staff. Assigns projects and establishes goals.

Conducts daily visits to crossing guard locations to review activities of staff.

Consults with local school district administrators to determine specific services required for various school events and holiday schedules.

Determines service needs and staff assignments at new crossing guard locations.

Prepares written reports and budget recommendations specific to the crossing guard unit.

Responds both verbally and in writing to complaints regarding crossing guard staff.

Reviews and processes time cards and work schedules for crossing guard staff.

Maintains a variety of records, memoranda, reports and other related files.

Responds to public inquiries regarding crossing guard related matters.

Monitors the purchase and use of supplies.

Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of:
English grammar and composition.
Principles of supervision and training techniques.
Effective customer service techniques.
Applicable safety rules, practices, and procedures.
Effective supervisory practices and training techniques.

Ability to:
Select, train, and supervise staff.
Communicate effectively with City employees, the public and children.
Learn, interpret, and apply applicable provisions of the Santa Monica Municipal Code and the California Vehicle Code.
Read maps and learn the location of City streets.
Write reports.
Maintain records.
Observe and report hazardous conditions.
Operate City vehicles and equipment.
Use independent judgment and make sound decisions.
Assist in the preparation of a budget.
Provide effective customer service.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with City employees and the public.

Skill in:
Supervision of staff.
Using a personal computer and applicable software applications.
Dealing effectively with individuals of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds, using tact and discretion.
Reading, writing, and communicating in English at an appropriate level.

Education, Training, and Experience:

High school graduation or equivalent. Two years of recent, paid work experience performing Crossing Guard or related job duties. Experience working with children in a supervisory capacity is desirable. At least one year of the experience must have included supervisory responsibilities or coordinating the work of others.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a valid Class C driver license. Possession of a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certificate is desirable.

If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS: Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation.
