JOB SUMMARY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
The Laboratory Technician position performs various laboratory duties and functions under direct supervision. This position is responsible for performing chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses, using EPA-approved qualitative and quantitative techniques in one or more of the following areas: drinking water, wastewater, and environmental samples.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DECISION MAKING

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Primary duties may include the following:
  • Receive, log, and track samples for processing.
  • Evaluate samples to determine appropriate methodology for analysis.
  • Maintain Chain of Custody process.
  • Calibrate, maintain and set-up equipment for a variety of laboratory operations.
  • Clean and maintain instrumentation and equipment.
  • Prepare samples for shipment to other laboratories.
Other duties and responsibilities may include the following:
  • Assist direct supervisor and/or senior staff with analytical tests.
  • Follow strict analytical and documentation protocols.
  • Prepares reagents and/or media for analytical testing.
  • Perform data entry for regulatory compliance.
  • Interact with internal and external customers via email, phone, and in person to provide information, answer questions, and resolve concerns.
Collect water and wastewater samples as needed.Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Salary is dependent upon qualifications)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in the chemical, environmental, biological sciences, physical sciences, or engineering; at least (16) college semester hours in chemistry, and at least (16) college semester hours in general microbiology and biology.Two (2) or more years of experience working as a lab analyst performing microbiological analysis for water and/or wastewater, and/or two (2) or more years of experience as a lab analyst performing chemical analysis for inorganic analytes for water and/or wastewater. PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
Experience working in a National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program certified laboratory.

1. Knowledge of a variety of quantitative/qualitative analyses used in wet analytical laboratory for drinking water and wastewater regulatory compliance.
2. Knowledge of QA/QC protocols, lab safety, and chemical hazards and hygiene.
3. Skill in oral and written communication.
4. Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
5. Skill in using computers and related software.
6. Ability to maintain high level of professionalism and working relationships with other City employees and the public.
7. Intermediate math skills.
8. Must be able to work evenings and weekends, as needed.

ENVIRONMENTAL/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS
While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; frequently required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; color vision; and ability to adjust focus.
