This position will be located at Finger Lakes State Park at 1505 E Peabody Rd, Columbia, MO 65202. Work week will entail 8-20 hours/week with the expectation that employees can work 1 full work day (8-10 hours, rarely 12) per week. Position will require travel in a state vehicle to state parks throughout northeast Missouri including but not limited to Cuivre River State Park, Graham Cave State Park, Long Branch State Park, Mark Twain State Park, Pershing State Park, and Thousand Hills State Park.

Candidates must be 18 years of age and have the ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license. Candidates should also be hardworking, able to perform physical work (can lift up to 45 pounds), and able to work in a variety of weather conditions including heat and cold.

Duration of Assignment: October 2024 - May 2025 with possibility of extension.

  • Install firelines using power equipment including chainsaws, backpack blowers, and brushcutters.
  • Assist on prescribed burns as a crew member, following direction of crew leader and burn boss.
  • Control invasive species via herbicide application using backpack sprayers and other herbicide applicators.
  • Engage in other ecological restoration activities for prairies, woodlands, and glades (examples: cedar removal on glades, seed collecting, etc.)

Experience to be Gained:

  • Work on a team in our beautiful state parks
  • Learn natural resource management skills including operations for prescribed fire, invasive species removal, and other ecological restoration tasks
  • Gain experience in utilizing off road vehicles and power equipment including chainsaws
  • Assist with surveys for native flora and fauna as opportunities arise
