DescriptionThis is a continuous recruitment. Testing will take place ongoing during the year, and P.O.S.T. Basic Course Police Academies are tentatively scheduled at minimum twice per year. Testing dates and all recruitment notifications will be announced via e-mail. Notices will only be sent once a date is scheduled. This recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies within this classification. Upon satisfactory graduation from a Bakersfield Police Department P.O.S.T. Minimum QualificationsApplications will be accepted
only from those applicants who properly complete the application and clearly demonstrate on the City application and supplemental questionnaire that they possess the minimum qualifications which include:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development (G.E.D.) exam; AND
- At least 21 years of age upon completion of the academy training;
- Must be a citizen of the United States; OR
- Permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for U.S. citizenship prior to application for employment in compliance with Government Code Section 1031.
- Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license.
- Must meet the medical standards recommended by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) .
- Must undergo a complete background investigation, which includes a polygraph, psychological examination, and fingerprint clearance.

Examination (Weighted: 100%) IMPORTANT: Applications from individuals who were disqualified during the background investigation or polygraph process within the past twelve (12) month period or failed the psychological examination for Police Officer administered by the City of Bakersfield within the past twelve (12) month period, are not eligible for this recruitment and will be rejected. VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.
VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)
HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).
RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement websitefor additional information.
