    SENIOR HEALTH EDUCATOR
    Health Educator
    Student Health Center

    Salary Range: $4,561 - $8,804/Monthly (Budgeted Hiring Salary Range $5,900 - $6,200/Monthly)

    Work Schedule : Full-Time, Monday - Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. alternating Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; exempt classification.

    Essential Functions : The Student Health Center provides high-quality, affordable health care and health education for the students of Cal State LA to preserve and enhance their potential for academic success and personal development. In support of this mission and under the general direction of the Student Health Center (SHC) Associate Director, the Senior Health Educator champions furthering the health and wellbeing of Cal State LA students and the campus community. The incumbent provides leadership in identifying goals and developing health promotion programs in the Student Health Center to address long and short-term campus health education needs. Under the direction of the Associate Director, the Senior Health Educator coordinates planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs with the goal of improving health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The incumbent recommends operational policies and plans necessary for the achievement of health education objectives and services consistent with professional standards, such as the American College Health Association's "Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education". Plans health education and promotion programs, activities, and services that reflect the needs of the diverse campus populations. Consults and coordinates with other health professionals in identifying campus health problems and in the development and administration of integrated health education programs. Develops strategies and programs designed to stimulate participation in health education programs using a wide range of media, including educational technologies and electronic and web based programs; prepares health education mass-media materials, consulting with the Division's Strategic Initiatives Manager as appropriate. Organizes and conducts educational programs and activities on various health topics that will contribute to the improvement of student health by bringing about change in understanding, attitudes, and behavior. Instructs students in principles of health by group or individual instruction. Provides preventive health counseling in such areas as, nutrition, pregnancy, and smoking cessation, and provides appropriate referrals. Documents record of individual health education sessions in Point and Click electronic health recording system; prepares a variety of written and verbal departmental reports; may apply for grants to support health education programs; and coordinates the recruitment, training and supervision of student program assistants and related health promotion programs. The incumbent keeps current with practices and trends in health education, especially those pertaining to a setting in higher education. Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Health Promotion and Education Center (HPEC); represents and advocates for HPEC. Provides assistance to the Associate Director in completing reports for Student Success fund and any other documents on behalf of HPEC. Supports and collaborates with the SHC Administration on an ongoing basis. Builds partnerships with campus stakeholders; collaborates with partners within the Division of Student Life in health and wellness programing and activities including the Dean of Students, Counseling & Psychological Services, Housing and Residence Life, Center for Student Involvement, Associated Students Inc. (ASI), and University Student Union (USU); collaborates with partners outside of Student Life. Actively participates and, as designated, takes leadership roles in meetings within the SHC and across the University. Participates in and conducts a broad range of health education activities and services for the campus.

    Required Qualifications & Experience : Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in an approved program in health education or a related health field. Equivalent to one to two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. The incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. The incumbent must have the ability to interact professionally and tactfully; handle confidential and sensitive matters with discretion; present technical information; use appropriate English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; develop, maintain, and update existing safety procedures and policies; and to multi task and solve various problems. The incumbent must have a demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the California State University. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current California State University employees who may apply for the position.     Desired Qualifications : Working knowledge of issues related to alcohol and other substances, bystander intervention, dating and domestic violence, healthy relationships, mental health, nutrition and fitness, sexual health, sexual violence, sleep hygiene, stalking, and other relevant health issues. Demonstrated leadership and programming experience in: health education in higher education; health education program development, implementation and evaluation; educational materials development; health issues, such as alcohol and other substances, bystander intervention, dating and domestic violence, healthy relationships, mental health, nutrition and fitness, sexual health, sexual violence, sleep hygiene, stalking, and other relevant health issues; and peer health education program implementation. Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in approved program in public health or related field.
