Preferred Candidates would have:
• Prior education or experience in environmental management or similar field.
• Experience in backcountry orienteering and Leave No Trace.

Duties Description

Under the direction of the Environmental Stewardship Biologist, or designee, the incumbent will perform a variety of technical assignments to ensure long term maintenance, protection, and resilience of ecosystems while protecting the natural environment and supporting the Agency’s broader mission. Duties will include, but are not limited to:
• Participates in fauna, and flora surveys using various types of equipment to obtain samples for identification, size, and quality.
• Collects and prepares fauna and flora samples for biological, physiological, and chemical analyses.
• Conducts surveys and compiles, summarizes, prepares, and proofs resulting data.
• Constructs and repairs habitat improvement structures.
• Invasive species management.
• Distributes supplies and materials and assists with the development of brochures.
• Responds to nuisance wildlife complaints and public inquiries, including black bear.
• Conducts checks for compliance with conditions of permits.
• Assists in the delivery of education programs.
• Maintains and repairs equipment and may perform rudimentary GIS tasks.

OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Must have the ability to follow directions and communicate in a positive manner.
• Must have a strong interest in, and commitment to environmental stewardship as well as a team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges.
• Must have the ability to lift heavy loads, walk long distances and work in a variety of weather.

Attention Employees: This is a temporary position within the Division of Environmental Stewardship and Planning - Allegany Region. As such, acceptance of this position could result in end-of-season termination of employment since any incumbent must be subject to the same terms of a new seasonal employee. The position and duration will be dependent upon funding availability.
