DESCRIPTION

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is seekingqualified candidates interested in applying for a Youth Sports Coordinator position. There is currently one position available. The Youth Sports Coordinator positions will be a part of an office team that will help implement a variety of youth sports programming. This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part-time staff and a budget of $74 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: Approximately 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.

The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Coordinate the scheduling of approximately 500 Youth teams annually utilizing our teamsideline.com/longbeach website.
  • Coordinate registration periods including taking payments (via ActiveNet software), customer assistance, certifying sports rosters and using approved vendors to order uniforms and prizes.
  • Assist with the marketing of programs.
  • Reserve game site locations by working with internal staff and off site partners (LBUSD and potentially others).
  • Supervise, schedule, and evaluate score keepers and staff.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Evaluate program inventory and order equipment from approved vendors.
  • Create and implement certification trainings for 50-60 Youth Sports coaches per season and train and certify 40-50 Youth Sports officials per season.
  • Drive to off-site meetings, trainings and game sites.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Five (5) years of experience working in recreation or a related field, including two years of experience acting as lead staff (an equivalent amount of education in a related area may substitute for up to one year).
  • Working knowledge of the youth and adult sports offered, but not limited to, include basketball, indoor soccer, t-ball/baseball/softball, volleyball, flag football, ball hockey, kick ball, futsal/outdoor soccer.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekday evenings and Saturdays.
  • Must possess a valid driver license at the time of selection.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience working with children and adults with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
  • Outstanding customer service and strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to evaluate and improve the Youth Sports experience for participants.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public, coaches, LBUSD personnel, and interdepartmental staff.
