DESCRIPTION

The Department of Public Works currently has two openings available.


THE DEPARTMENT


The mission of the Department of Public Works is “to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure and environment for the benefit of the public.” The Department’s core services are focused on providing for and maintaining safe and efficient infrastructure for the community, providing for sustainable environmental protection including water quality and waste collection and diversion, and safely and efficiently designing, constructing, delivering, protecting and maintaining services for public facilities and public rights-of-way. The Department has six bureaus: Business Operations, Engineering, Environmental Services, Project Management, Public Service, and Transportation Project Management. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million. THE POSITION

Engineering Interns assist with tasks related to the Division's operations that are involved with performing traffic and transportation research, analysis, planning and design. Undergraduate and postgraduate students with an interest in engineering, planning, urban planning, transportation, and other related fields are encouraged to apply.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, may be eligible for sick leave benefits.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Will assist with and conduct data collection tasks
  • Maintenance of the Crossroads collision database
  • Prepare summaries of internal and external meetings
  • Conduct basic research on policies and standards, and creates introductory design work under supervision.
  • Perform other related duties as required.


REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program with a major in Political Science, Environmental Studies/Science, Geography, Planning, Urban Planning, Engineering or related fields from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher (proof required) OR
  • Recently graduated from an undergraduate program (within one year of application submission) from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher (proof required).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • A valid California Class C Driver License
