    This position will be located at 1730 E. Elm Street, Jefferson City, MO within the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Environmental Quality, Superfund Section.

    Superfund Section offers a breadth of variety that makes every day interesting and enjoyable while addressing sites contaminated with hazardous substances. In this role, you’ll lead three team members and perform project management on select projects. You’ll work on sites in various geographical and geological settings across the state as part of a diverse team of professionals. You’ll also interact with stakeholders, including community members, government agencies, potentially responsible parties, lawyers, consultants, etc.

    • Serve as chief of the Engineering and Remedial Project Management Unit, supervising two Environmental Assistants/Analysts and one Assistant/Associate Engineer overseeing the investigation and cleanup of Superfund National Priorities List sites as well as sites in state cleanup programs.
    • Serve as the section’s lead engineer, providing mentoring, engineering review and guidance to the section’s Assistant/Associate Engineer and other project managers. Engineering review includes engineering designs, plan drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and other engineering proposals.
    • Mentor the Assistant/Associate Engineer and provide necessary oversight to verify engineering experience necessary for the Assistant/Associate to become a Professional Engineer.
    • Project management for assigned sites. Involves preparing and/or reviewing documents associated with the Superfund cleanup process; negotiating with potentially responsible parties; developing project schedules and assisting in preparations of budgets for project cost determinations; tracking project expenditures; and coordinating activities with various stakeholders.
    • Coordinate activities conducted under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Consolidated Cooperative Agreement with other chiefs in the section to ensure commitments are met.
    • Conduct engineering investigations, inspection of construction activities and remedial measures to assure compliance with requirements, and engineering evaluations of remedial alternatives and designs.
    • Participate in public meetings and make public presentations regarding the laws, regulations, policies, and engineering aspects of remedial actions.


    Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri

    To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

    • Environmental Engineering : Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods to protect and improve the quality of the environment and its resources; and to monitor, control, abate, and prevent pollutants.
    • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving : Uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
    • Computer Skills : uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
    • Comprehension : Ability to comprehend, interpret, and/or apply laws, regulations, policies, guidance procedures, maps, plans, and reports.
    • Developing Others : Develops the ability of others to perform and contribute to the organization by providing ongoing feedback and by providing opportunities to learn through formal and informal methods.
    • Vehicle Operation : Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, or watercraft.


    Equivalent to those typically gained by:

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited program, and six or more years of engineering experience.


    Training, certification, and/or education in continuous process improvement programs such as Lean Six Sigma as well as completion of Missouri Way, Leadership Academy, and similar programs is preferred.
