    Job Description

    Note for internal applicants: Successful candidates already at rates above the posted salary will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine final salary outcome.

    This position will be filled at a salary no higher than the posted maximum salary.

    Job Location: Springfield District Office, 3025 E. Kearney Street, Springfield, MO

    Substitution of experience for the education requirement will be considered.

    The transportation enforcement investigator conducts routine safety and economic investigations, educational briefings, safety audits, inspections of vehicles within an assigned region of the state and develops enforcement cases. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

    What you’ll do:

    • Conducts routine investigations, educational briefings, and safety audits of interstate and intrastate motor carriers and vehicles for conformance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Missouri State Statutes in the areas of safety and hazardous materials regulations.
    • Conducts economic enforcement inspections of interstate and intrastate motor carriers, the bus and limousine industries, hazardous materials cargo trailers, and mobile home carriers; investigates complaints regarding unauthorized carrier operations.
    • Conducts safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles, hazardous materials compliance reviews, and physical inspections.
    • Determines the severity of identified violations of carriers, resolving those that are less severe and documenting serious violations; confers with the supervisor concerning violations that warrant legal procedures; testifies in administrative and legal proceedings.
    • Conducts joint inspections, investigations, educational briefings, safety audits and economic enforcement actions with representatives of other state and federal agencies.


    All you need for success:

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree: Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Safety, Business Administration, or related field.
      • Substitution of experience for the education requirement will be considered.
    • Certification in North American Standard Inspection, General Hazardous Materials, Cargo Tank/Bulk Package, Federal Compliance Review, Motor Coach and Enforcement Procedures courses within six to 12 months of hire.
    • Successful completion of a range of motion examination and a medical-physical examination.


    Special Working Conditions:

    • Job requires regular travel within an assigned region and occasional, statewide, overnight travel.
    • Job requires heavy physical exertion and effort.
    • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health, and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
    • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
