    Ty pe of Recruitment: We encourage applications from County employees within the Public Works Department who have successfully finished their initial probationary period.

    Current employees in unclassified service in the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works who meet the following criteria also qualify to participate in this exam:

    • Unclassified employees who have attained permanent County status on a classified position by successful completion of the initial probationary period, with no break in service since leaving the classified service.-OR-
    • Full-time employees in the unclassified service with at least six months of full-time experience in the unclassified service at the time of filing the application.


    Out-of-class experience will not be accepted for this examination.

    WITHHOLD INFORMATION: If you are within six (6) months of meeting the experience requirement, then you can still apply for this exam. However, we will not include you on the list sent to hiring managers until we have verified that you meet the requirements.

    Essential Job Functions

    WHAT WILL I DO AS A SURVEY TECHNICIAN II?
    • Obtains accurate survey information in the field (e.g., construction sites, county right-of-way)
    • Performs mathematical analysis
    • Leads staff (e.g., Survey Technician I, Survey Aid)
    • Maintains and operates surveying tools (e.g., transit, theodolite, electronic distance measuring instrument, data collecting devices, total station, GPS Receiver, stadia, rod)
    • Drives automotive equipment


    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

    Three years of field survey experience, one year of which must have been at the level of a Survey Technician I*.

    Completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter units in an accredited college or university with specialization in engineering, including a course in surveying** may be substituted for one year of the non-specialized experience.

    License:

    A valid California Class "C" Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
    License information:
    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
    Physical class: Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions

    Special requirement information:

    *Experience at the level of Survey Technician I in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: works on a survey crew in conjunction with the Survey Technician II or higher-level supervisor by taking line from distant or physically measured points, operating a rod for vertical elevation determination, and measuring distances with a steel tape or a reflective prism pole.

    • Tools, Equipment, and Field Procedures
    • Mathematical Skills (e.g., algebra, geometry, trigonometry)
    • Interpreting Survey and Engineering Plans
    • Safety Guidelines and Regulations


    Applicants must meet the requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on all weighted exam parts in order to be placed on the eligible register.
