    Position Duties

    The San Jose Police Department is currently recruiting for a School Safety Supervisor position. The School Safety Supervisor will be part of the San Jose Police Department's Support Services Division, School Safety & Education Unit. The School Safety and Education Unit provides administrative support and staffing for the Adult Crossing Guard Program for the City of San Jose. Additionally, the Unit coordinates the training and supervision of Student Safety Patrols at elementary schools and provides pedestrian safety educational presentations throughout the City. The unit comprises of 1 Captain, 1 Program Manager, 4 School Safety Supervisors and 200+ School Crossing Guards. The work schedule for this position is a 4/10 schedule (10-hour workdays/ 4 days a week).

    The duties of this position include (but are not limited to) the following:
    • Supervises School Crossing Guards, including recruitment, interview of prospective candidates, training, scheduling, and discipline.
    • Administers, schedules, and coordinates the activities of the school crossing guard program, including maintenance of timesheets, mileage forms, performance evaluations, within an assigned geographical area.
    • Develops school safety patrol programs; conducts training in safety and advises on current state requirements.
    • Designs, prepares, or obtains teaching materials including films, videos, brochures, and testing materials for educational programs in pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, personal safety, and prevention of child sexual assault.
    • Works with Police Training and Traffic Operations to develop audio-visual instructional materials including slide and video presentations.
    • Prepares and gives presentations to student, parent, and teacher groups in and monitors program effectiveness.
    • Prepares and submits timecards for Crossing Guards.
    • Observes and reports on unsafe physical conditions of streets, roads, signs, crosswalks, and sidewalks. Makes recommendations on adjustments to matters related to the safety of student pedestrian safety.
    • Organizes and directs special events for school-age children.
    • May perform duties of a School Crossing Guard on a relief basis, as required.
    • Maintains personnel files for School Crossing Guards.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    Graduation from high school and one year of experience in supervision, including coordinating and scheduling of assignments, and in the preparation and presentation of information to large groups.

    Required Licensing:
    • Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in California.
    • As a condition of employment, incumbents may be required to use their personal vehicles in performing the job duties, and maintain a valid City of San Jose driving permit.

    Background: Submit to a personal background investigation as required by the Police Department

    Other Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

    Job expertise - Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations. Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese is desired.

    Communication skills - Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills; displays openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts.

    Computer skills - Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.

    Customer Service - Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently using professional demeanor.

    Reliability - Completes quality work assignments in a timely and efficient manner; fulfills responsibilities and maintains confidentiality as appropriate.

    Multi-tasking - Can handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously; has handled a wide variety of assignments in past and/or current position(s).

    Supervision - Sets effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources; provides motivational support; empowers others; assigns decision-making and work functions to others in an appropriate manner to maximize organizational and individual effectiveness.

    Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills - Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

    Selection Process

    The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to the Job Specific Questions. Only the candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process will consist of one or more interviews, and a background investigation.
