    Position Information

    This recruitment is promotional only. You must presently be a full or part-time regular or probationary County of Sonoma, Community Development Commission, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, or Sonoma County Water Agency employee in order to apply for this position.

    The Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) Department has requested a department promotional certification to fill a Lead Automotive Technician position. Only qualified permanent and/or probationary SPI employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised position . This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time or part-time positions as they occur during the active status of the list.

    Note: ASE (National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence) Master Automotive Technician certification is required for this position.

    The Lead Automotive Technician is responsible for assisting the supervisor in assigning and reviewing the work of Automotive Mechanic and Technician staff. This position provides technical assistance to the team and performs the most complex work on vehicles in the Light Equipment section of the Fleet Operations Division. Additional responsibilities include:

    • Performing diagnosis, maintenance, and repair/service of County gas, electric, and hybrid vehicles
    • Performing routine computer data entry on daily work performed and retrieving previous repairs
    • Inspecting and servicing emissions control devices and performing related vehicle testing and certification.
    • Communicating with customers and vendors on the equipment status and repair
    • Ensuring technicians are trained on and follow safety protocols and develop related documents

    The ideal candidate will have extensive experience diagnosing and repairing automobiles, light duty trucks, SUV's, and vans and will possess many of the following:

    • Experience in a lead or supervisory role within the automotive industry
    • Knowledge of the principles of supervision, staff development, and training
    • Experience using computers to organize data and generate reports, including working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office
    • Great customer service skills, with the ability to interact with a diverse customer base
    • Certified Electric Vehicle Technician (CEVT) certification desired, not required

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience & Education: Any combination of education, training, and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, this would include the ability to read and write English and perform basic arithmetic calculations at a level sufficient to perform the duties of the position, and five years of experience as an automotive technician/mechanic. Desirable experience would include one year of experience working as a lead worker or supervisor.

    License:Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential functions of the position. The position advertised on this announcement does require possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

    Certifications & Licenses: The ASE (National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence) Master Automotive Technician certification is required.

    A current Smog Check Technician license(s) as required by the State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair to test and repair emission control systems is required.

    Class "A" Lamp Adjuster license and Class "C" Brake Adjuster licenses are required on the completion of the probationary period.

    Special Requirement: Possession of small and large hand tools necessary to perform all assigned work is required.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of: the theory and complexities of automotive technology, care and operation of internal combustion engines, current repair methods, tools, diagnostic equipment, and parts used in the major repair of vehicles.

    Ability to: diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and safety problems of vehicles; determine appropriate maintenance and repairs; effectively use hand tools and automotive diagnostic equipment; interpret manufacturers' specifications; provide assistance and training to lower-level staff; follow oral and written instructions; use computer system to, access and maintain accurate records; use computer to organize data and generate reports; effectively deal with County employees and dealer representatives; perform basic arithmetic calculations, and occasionally work evenings and weekends.

    The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

    An Application and Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) may be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

    • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.


    Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application and Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as the number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.

    Additional Information

    A background investigation may be required prior to employment. Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation. Failure to sign prescribed forms will result in the candidate not being considered further for that vacancy. Reference information will not be made available to applicants.
