The Per Diem Nurse is distinguished from the Registered Nurse classification in that Per Diem Nurses are scheduled to work on an as-needed basis (intermittent) to supplement staffing needs.
BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. To qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive pay in addition to the adjusted base rate of pay in the noted amounts for educational attainments which are not specifically required for the classification:
- Bachelor's Degree $1.25/hr
- Graduate's Degree $1.75/hr

CLOSING DATE: 7/11/2025Examples Of DutiesDuties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Utilizes the nursing process to plan, deliver, and evaluate comprehensive patient care during the antepartum, intrapartum, and immediate postpartum periods.
- Monitors maternal and fetal well-being, interprets fetal heart rate tracings, and responds to obstetric emergencies according to clinical protocols.
- Administers prescribed treatments and medications in accordance with physician orders.
- Performs and documents patient assessments and observations; reports all pertinent findings and ensures appropriate clinical follow-through.
- Assists physicians with labor management, vaginal and cesarean deliveries, and other obstetric procedures.
- Maintains unit organization and ensures completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift.
- Prepares and maintains a sterile surgical environment; manages instruments and supplies for procedures, positions patients, and assists with obtaining x-rays and medications as needed.
- Participates in training, supervision, and evaluation of ancillary staff; assists with onboarding and mentoring of new personnel.
Typical QualificationsThese are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE Per Diem Registered Nurse III - requires at least five (5) years of labor and delivery nursing experience. These employees may be appointed to work on specialized short-term projects such as hospital accreditation or on other projects that require specialized administrative duties and responsibilities.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. Must possess and maintain a current valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California, or licensure in another state with California licensure pending.
- Must possess a valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) Certificate prior to the first day of employment.
- Must possess a current, valid Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) certification.
- Must possess a current, valid Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of professional nursing theory, techniques, and current practices, particularly as they relate to Labor and Delivery. Working knowledge of medical terminology, hospital protocols, obstetric-specific equipment, medications, and controlled substances.
Working ability to: plan and organize nursing care; train and supervise non-professional staff; establish and maintain the confidence of patients and interdisciplinary staff; and work effectively across various hospital departments and shifts as needed. Proficient in advanced fetal monitoring techniques, with the ability to accurately interpret and respond to electronic fetal heart rate patterns in alignment with clinical standards. Demonstrated ability to perform neonatal resuscitation swiftly and effectively in accordance with NRP guidelines, ensuring prompt stabilization and care of newborns in critical situations.
