    Full-time position available with the City Planning Department, Census Data Forecasting Branch Division located at 414 East 12th Street
    Salary Range: $6,489-$9,734/month
    Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. *Telework schedule available 1 day a week after 6-month probationary period completed

    Responsibilities

    The GIS & Data Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the analytical, technical, and strategic functions related to geographic information systems (GIS), data analytics, and reporting in support of City Planning and Development. This role provides leadership to analysts and technical staff, ensuring high standards in data management, GIS operations, forecasting, and interdepartmental collaboration. The Supervisor plays a critical role in developing and maintaining systems, policies, procedures, and data strategies that inform planning and decision-making across the department.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Supervises analysts and GIS staff, assigning tasks, reviewing work for quality and accuracy, and ensuring professional development.
    • Provides direction on data analysis projects, GIS initiatives, and reporting efforts to align with departmental and city-wide goals.
    • Ensures adherence to standards and policies related to data governance, GIS protocols, and documentation practices.
    • Provides expert guidance on spatial analysis, map production, and visualization tools, ensuring outputs are accurate, effective, and aligned with planning needs.
    • Oversees the collection, analysis, and reporting of urban development data, including census data, development activity, and land use trends.
    • Provides high-level analytical support for major planning projects and citywide initiatives.
    • Acts as the department's liaison with internal departments and external agencies on matters related to GIS, data sharing, census coordination, and forecasting.
    • Represents the city on regional forecasting and data analysis committees, ensuring local priorities are reflected.
    • Develops and maintains internal procedures, workflows, and documentation to ensure consistency and efficiency in GIS and data operations.
    • Encourages innovation by guiding staff to explore and implement emerging data technologies and methods.
    • Provides subject matter expertise in communicating complex data and spatial trends to non-technical audiences.



    Qualifications

    REQUIRES an accredited Master's degree in Planning and 3 years responsible professional experience in city, regional, or urban planning work; OR an accredited Bachelor's degree and 5 years of professional experience in city, regional, or urban planning work including 2 years professional work in directing a program or section. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen as prescribed by the City.

    The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
    For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
    Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

    If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
