    Requirements

    MOS Code: 3521 (Marine Corps), 2T351A (Air Force), 91H (Army), 730B (Navy)

    Education and Experience : Graduation from a heavy/diesel equipment maintenance and repair program from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of experience in heavy/diesel maintenance in a lead or supervisory role; or a High School Diploma, or GED, or higher, and six (6) years of journey-level diesel mechanic experience including four (4) years in a lead or supervisory capacity.

    Licenses and Certificates :
    • Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or equivalent from another state by time of appointment.
    • Obtain and maintain a minimum of four (4) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Vehicle Certifications [T1-T8] as specified in ASE's certification tests series within six (6) months of appointment.
    • Obtain and maintain a Texas State Vehicle Inspector License Certification within six (6) months of appointment.
    • May require an Underground Storage Tank Class A/B Operator's Certification within six (6) months of appointment.


    Special Requirements : Positions requiring a CDL or positions of a safety-sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.

    General Purpose

    Under direction, perform supervisory work ensuring documentation and completion of maintenance and repair work of heavy vehicles at one or more work sites.

    Typical Duties

    Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of staff involved in the repair of heavy vehicles and equipment. Involves: Direct repairs and communicates with staff on needed repairs. Implement plans and schedules to determine objectives needing emphasis. Recommend or adjust work priorities, resources, and work plans as required. Prioritize technician workloads to meet operational needs. Inspect, evaluate, and review system checks to ensure proper function and optimal operation within set parameters. Provide advice, instructions, and train mechanics on diagnosing problems, testing procedures, determining malfunctions, making repairs, and ensuring functionality and safety of equipment. Diagnose difficult equipment and/or vehicle problems and recommend repairs. Monitor technician task performance. Enforce rules, regulations, and performance goals.

    Supervise, monitor, and control fleet maintenance operations. Involves: Maintain records, review and/or approve estimates and requisition required parts and materials. Responsible for cleanliness, condition, and reporting of needed fleet maintenance shop repairs of the assigned shop. Monitor, guide, assist, and achieve shop productivity through technician’s billable hour goals. Identify areas of improvement, review with appropriate management staff, and implement improvements. Develop and present reports. Ensure that all applicable Environmental Protection Agency guidelines are met. Determine and oversee compliance with safety, hazard, and related programs, policies, and procedures. On an as-needed basis may be required to assume the temporary role of immediate supervisor and/or subordinate personnel to ensure the continuity of operations during absences.

    Supervise assigned personnel. Involves: Schedule, assign, and check work. Appraise employee performance and review evaluations by subordinate supervisors. Provide for training and development. Enforce personnel rules and regulations and work behavior standards firmly and impartially. Counsel, motivate, and maintain harmony. Interview applicants. Recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, and other employee status changes.
