About this position: Health Information Technicians focus on coding accuracy, give technical direction, and ensure compliance with regulations.
What you will do: Under the general supervision of a higher-level supervisor, Health Information Technicians collect and code health information for reimbursement, statistics, and mandatory reporting for a County hospital, clinic, or complex care facility.

Essential Job Functions- Analyzes client data within the electronic health record system, consults with mental health service providers in order to clarify findings, and takes necessary steps to merge duplicate client records and correct documentation errors.
- Provides technical direction and support to mental health service providers on correcting data errors within the electronic health record system, and to other health information personnel on the merge process, and instructs other administrative divisions on system modifications needed to prevent errors in data and ensure data integrity within the electronic health record system.
- Processes and provides direction on the disclosure of confidential client record requests such as from subpoenas consistent with State and federal regulations including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
- Prepares medical record purge reports for all Departmental directly-operated programs, and processes program requests for purging and archiving client charts.
Provides guidance on filing of health information into the client record and on validating the identity of requesting parties - Assembles and analyzes health information for completeness, consistency, and compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, other State and federal laws and regulations, and Departmental policies and procedures, assuring that all relevant documentation is included.
- Provides guidance and direction to clerical staff and other health information personnel engaged in reviewing health information for completeness, consistency and compliance with laws and departmental regulations.
RequirementsHow do I qualify: Option I: Must be Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)* or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)* by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) -AND- Two years of full-time experience** managing patient information, coding, and abstracting health information.
Option II: Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)* by AHIMA -AND- One year of full-time experience** managing patient information, coding, and abstracting health information.
** Experience is evaluated on the basis of a verifiable 40-hour workweek. Work performed part-time will not be prorated.
Physical Expectations: PHYSICAL CLASS 2- This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
LICENSE:A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:Experience with mental health coding.
Experience with Medi-Cal documentation and claiming standards.
Additional Information Our Assessment Process: This examination will consist of an evaluation of education, experience, and desirable qualifications based upon application and supplemental questionnaire information weighted 100%. Additional credit will be given for desirable qualifications. In order to be placed on the eligible register, achieving a passing score of 70% or higher is required.
