    The Department of Medical Examiner investigates and resolves circumstances, manner and cause of all violent, sudden or unusual deaths occurring within the County.

    Each year approximately 18,000 cases are reported to the Department, of which about half fall within its jurisdiction. The Department of Medical Examiner conducts about 5,700 autopsies per year, making it one of the largest medical examiner’s offices in the world. It has also become one of the most technologically sophisticated offices in the world, due to the complexity of cases investigated, including numerous high profile cases.

    The team member we are searching for:
    • A dedicated individual who understands the importance of treating decedents' personal property with respect and care while navigating the complexities surrounding sensitive situations.
      Ensure detailed receipts are created and personal property belonging to decedents is carefully inventoried, allowing the Department of Medical Examiner to securely uphold these cherished items until their cases are resolved.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Collects and verifies decedent's personal effects from the investigator's Witness Declaration form, status of Next of Kin identification, notification and if the Public Administrator has been contacted by the Investigators.
    • Reviews content of suicide note and secures with decedents property. Reviews contents of decedents wills/testaments and files originals with probate court.
    • Answers questions from the general public, immediate family of decedents, and investigative or court authorities, the proper disposition of personal property, identification and location of next-of-kin and policy methods or restrictions in obtaining the release of the retained personal property.
    • Releases to authorized persons, upon request and presentation of proof of ownership, property no longer required as evidence or for safekeeping.
    • Prepares decedents' personal effects for periodic auctions, as needed.


    Requirements

    Requirements to Qualify:

    Six months' experience in stock, property or supply work.

    License:

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Withhold:

    No withhold will be allowed. Required experience must be fully met by the last day of filing, and clearly indicated on the application.

    Physical class:

    Physical Class III- Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    Supplemental Questionnaire:

    Applicants will be required to complete a supplementary job willingness questionnaire at the time of application. Those who do not consent to the specified working conditions-including handling soiled decedent property and clothing that may involve strong odors, bodily fluids, insects, and similar factors-will be disqualified from consideration.

    This examination will consist of multiple choice and/or simulation assessments, weighted 100%, covering:

    The passing score for the assessment is 70%.

    MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES, PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    Transfer of test components:

    If you recently took identical components for other exams, the test responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

    Eligibility and Vacancy Information:

    Qualified applicants who passed the assessment are placed on an eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies throughout Los Angeles County as they occur.

    VETERAN'S CREDIT:

    If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran’s credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to the exam analyst at csears@hr.lacounty.gov as soon as possible.
