The Youth Intervention Services (YIS) unit in the Community Services Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (Department) is recruiting to fill a Community Services Supervisor position in the San José Youth Empowerment Alliance Program . S ince 1991, th is initiative - formerly the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Taskforce - has led citywide efforts to reduc e youth violence and gang involvement using a nationally recognized model. The mission is to provide safe, supportive environments for youth, ages 6 to 24, helping them avoid crime and violence while building positive futures In addition, the Youth Empowerment Alliance administers two City-funded grant programs : the Bringing Everyone’s Strengths Together (BEST) and the Safe Summer Initiative Grant (SSIG) programs that support community-based organizations to provide services and supports for youth and their families . Finally , the Department is responsible for leading the implementation of the City’s Children and Youth Services Master Plan , which serves children, youth, and young adults . This includes coordinating the integration of programs and services across City departments, aligning strategies, and leveraging resources in collaboration with community stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive, equitable , and effective support system for young people .
The Community Services Supervisor will oversee the daily operation of youth-focused initiatives aimed at preventing violence and gang involvement, improving school engagement, and strengthening community support systems. This includes managing staff performan ce, evaluation program effectiveness, and enhancing service delivery across multiple efforts. The Community Services Supervi sor will also guide the implementation of the Children and Youth Services Master Plan, working with internal teams and external partners to integrate services and resources across the City . Programs under the Community Services Supervisor’s leadership include the Safe School Campus Initiative (SSCI ), Female Intervention Team (FIT), and SJWorks - each focused on helping youth build resilience, confidence, and personal success.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced and passionate leader with a background in youth development, community engagement, and violence prevention. They must demonstrate a strong ability to collaborate with City departments, law enforcement, schools, and community organizations to address systemic challenges facing youth and families. T his full-time position will be housed at the Hank Community Center and will have a hybrid work schedule, which includes working onsite and will require travel across the city , when necessary . The position works 40 hours per week with a typical schedule of Monday-Friday, hours will vary depending on activities and events and will require some evening or weekend work .
Job Duties
Job duties for the position include , but are not limited to:
- Lead the development , implementation , evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of program activities and goals that improve the lives of youth and families in the community.
- Build strong relationships with community members, schools, and partner organizations to ensure ongoing collaboration , engagement , and leveraging of resources .
- Design , implement, coordinate, and evaluate programs that include family, school , and community- based support s, services, and activities.
- Oversee and monitor program budget s , ensuring responsible use of public funds.
- Supervise, train, and mentor a team of approximately 25 staff, including Community Coordinators, Youth Outreach Specialists, Youth Outreach Workers, and interns , in the day-to-day operation of services.
- Plan, host, and r epresent the department at community meetings, public events, and conferences , as appropriate , to increase awareness and foster partnerships.
- Collaborate and c oordinate efforts among service providers and agencies to align resources and improve service delivery.
- Prepare clear, well-written reports , outreach materials, and other documents for community members and City leadership, including the City Council and City Manager.
- Develop and lead crisis response plans and strategies to address emerging youth, family, and neighborhood concerns, including gang violence , graffiti activity , and other public safety issues.
- Connect residents with city, county, school , and community-based services to help solve complex challenges and improve overall quality of life.
