    What You'll Be Doing

Great Opportunity to Manage a Community Library in Wake County!

WCPL is searching for a Community Library Branch Manager for a library in a non-traditional setting. The Athens Drive Community Library resides within Athens Drive High School and shares space with the school media center and media center staff employed by WCPSS. The library is open 35 hours per week and staff work in the hours after school from approximately 2:45 p.m.-9 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays. During the summer when school is out of session, the library’s hours expand to 70 hours per week to match the other regional and community libraries.

Public Library staff consists of a full-time manager, three part-time librarians, and four part-time library assistants. The Library Manager works a more traditional 8-5/9-6 schedule to attend meetings, work on projects, create schedules, and ensure that everything is ready for the library to operate during business hours. Engaging and interacting with staff often happens in late afternoons to early evening hours. The manager works closely with senior library management on the collections, programming for children and adults, furnishings, technology and supervising staff. The manager also serves as liaison between the school media center staff and the school principal, representing the interests of the public library and county. Due to its location within a public school, the library is subject to code red drills, regular school behavior incidents and must follow inclement weather closures that do not necessarily coincide with county office closures.

This location is scheduled to move out of the school during the process of a staggered school renovation. Due to the 2024 bond referendum a new location will be constructed in the next seven years. There may be a period of closure in which staff will need to be reallocated to other locations and the manager may be assigned to teams, projects, or support coverage at other locations.
