POSITION INFORMATIONThe Facilities Management Department has one current permanent, full-time vacancy for Custodian - II. This position is responsible for providing janitorial services and essential cleaning/maintenance of County owned and operated facilities ensuring the health and safety of Placer County Employees and the general public.
Each level in this job series has different minimum qualifications. To participate in the recruitment at Level I, Level II or both levels, you must complete and submit separate applications for each recruitment.
The eligible list created for this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies for both temporary/extra-help and permanent positions.
*Temporary/Extra-help assignments are limited to 28 hours per week with a cap of 999 hours or 960 hours for CalPERS retired annuitants in a fiscal year and are not eligible for benefits. Extra-help appointments made from this eligible list may transition to permanent status, should vacancies arise.

Human Resources website.DEFINITIONTo perform a variety of custodial duties to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of assigned rooms, buildings and related County facilities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is the full journey level class within the Custodian series. This class is distinguished from the Custodian I by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the entry level.
This class is distinguished from the Senior Custodian in that the latter performs facility use coordination duties and exercises technical and functional supervision over custodial staff.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general supervision from a Supervising Custodian and may receive technical and functional supervision from management and supervisory staff.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIESDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Sweep, mop, wax, buff and scrub floors; vacuum and clean carpets; clean restrooms; empty and clean waste receptacles.
- Dust, wax, wash and polish furniture and woodwork; wash windows, walls, and blinds; polish metal work.
- Clean and dust books and shelves; move and arrange furniture and equipment.
- Perform minor building maintenance or repairs of custodial related equipment.
- Inspect buildings for safety, fire and sanitary hazards.
- Operate a variety of electrical cleaning equipment; maintain custodial equipment and supplies.
- Unlock and lock entrances to buildings; check buildings for security.
- May train and lead assigned custodial staff.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the public using principles of good customer services.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONSWork is typically performed in indoor and outdoor environments with variable temperature conditions. May require travel to and from other locations in a variety of outdoor weather conditions. Depending on area of assignment, additional background clearance with the Department of Justice (DOJ) may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSExperience and Training Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: One year of experience performing duties similar to a Custodian I with Placer County.
Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Required License or Certificate:
May need to possess a valid driver's license as required depending on the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of: - Cleaning materials and disinfectants, equipment and tools used in custodial work.
- Principles and practices of work safety.
- Methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls and fixtures.
Ability to: - On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules; Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify safety hazards; identify and locate supplies and equipment; identify and locate cleaning and maintenance issues; interpret work assignments; remember tasks and daily assignments; and explain cleaning and maintenance issues to others.
- Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing work papers; stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist while performing cleaning or general facility maintenance activities; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; regularly lift very heavy weight.
- Learn how to use a variety of equipment, materials and tools required in custodial work.
- Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.
- Perform heavy manual work.
- Work assigned shifts.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Use a variety of equipment, materials, and tools, including electrical cleaning equipment, required in custodial and minor maintenance work.
SELECTION PROCEDURE Training & Experience Rating (50%) Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training, and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.
Written Examination (50%)After the posted filing deadline, qualified candidates will receive a notification via email when the examination is available. The online examination may include multiple choice, true/false, fill-in, matching, and/or essay type questions directly related to the required knowledge and abilities for this classification.
Note: Candidates will have approximately three (3) calendar days from the date of notification to complete the online examination. Only one attempt will be permitted.
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONLength of Probation: All permanent appointments from open eligible lists to positions in the classified service shall serve a probationary period of twelve (12) calendar months or two thousand eighty (2,080) hours, whichever is more.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENTPrior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination (which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation), sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S. For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation (which may include a voice stress analysis and/or a polygraph), and/or be bonded. Additionally, positions in law enforcement classifications and those supporting law enforcement functions will be required to complete a conviction history questionnaire prior to or during the interview process. Applicants for positions with access to Medi-Cal billing software or who are licensed providers must clear the Federal Exclusion List, credentialing, and social security verification. Failure to clear these requirements may result in an employment offer being withdrawn.

For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey level) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required).
