    The award-winning San José Public Library (SJPL) consists of more than 600 employees, a 23% bilingual workforce, and has 24 branch libraries across San José, in addition to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, which is the city’s main library jointly operated through a unique partnership with San José State University. SJPL serves a diverse community of roughly one-million residents and currently has nearly 700,000 library members. It annually attracts over 6 million visitors (pre-pandemic) and circulates more than 8 million items per year.

    Over the past few years, SJPL has cultivated a 21st century library experience dedicated to public service and committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion at the core.     Position Duties

    San José Public Library (SJPL) is recruiting a Senior Librarian to join the Library's Public Engagement Division as the Web Services Manager. This position will help shape , maintain , and enhance the Library’s digital presence and web -based platforms, includ ing :
    • Public Website ( www.sjpl.org)
    • Library catalog and events calendar
    • Joint website with San Jos é State University King Library ( www.sjlibrary.org
    • Sierra - Integrated Library System (ILS)
    • SharePoint
    • SJPL Blog Team
    • External digital library profiles and public-facing platforms (Google My Business & Apple Business Connect)


    Th e Web Services Manager will serve as t he pri mary point of contact for all web-related matters and is responsible for the deve lopment , maintenance, and performance of the Library’s web infrastructure . R esponsibilities also include troubleshooting web issues, ensuring accessibility , and security compliance .

    This position will supervise a team of two full-time and one part-time staff membe rs , and will work collaborat ively with internal stakeholders , Library leadership, external partners, and vendors to ensure seamless integration and functionality across platforms .

    In addition, th e Web Services Manager will also actively participate in the City’s Digi tal Priva cy and A rtificial I ntelligence Working Groups , and up hold L ibrary privacy and ethics standards.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Serve as project manager and technical subject matter expert for all web-related initiatives


    • Lead the team in developing and maintaining engaging, accessible, and user-friendly digital content


    • Collaborate with the Library’s Marketing and Communications Unit to align web content with SJPL’s b randing, public awareness campaigns, and strategic initiatives


    • Oversee compliance with ADA standards , digital and data privacy , readability, and language access


    • Conduct regular audits of website content, performance, and security, as well accessibility and usability testing


    • Perform scheduled website maintenance and updates


    • A naly z e and report on web analytics to inform improvements and enhance user engagement utilizing Google Analytics and Looker Studio


    • Stay up to date with emerging digital and tech nology trends relevant to l ibraries and public sector


    Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Develop and manage websites, web applications , and custom code
    • Apply k nowledge of SEO tools and strategies
    • Evaluate, pilot, and implement new web tools and solutions
    • W eb content management systems and optimization
    • Review vendor privacy policies and guide staff on privacy best practices
    • Understanding of AI ethics and implementation
    • V endor management
    • Apply user experience (UX) principles to improve usability and design
    • Profiency with platforms such as SharePoint, Sierra, Beanstack , Gtranslate , Spring S hare , and Bibliocommons


    The ideal candidate must be highly organized, detail - oriented, a coll aborative team leader, effective communicator, skilled in project management, creative , knowledgeable abo ut digital privacy, passionate about public service, digital innovation, and an advocate of SJPL's online presence committed to upholding its brand standards .

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: A Master's Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university

    Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible professional library experience, including lead responsibility for professional and technical staff.

    OR

    Due to this position being assigned to a specialized program or service, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university AND four (4) years of increasingly responsible professional library experience, including supervision or lead responsibility for web design staff will be accepted.

    Other Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

    • Job Expertise - Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations. Ability to gather and analyze data to facilitate and improve library or library program procedures and techniques. Knowledge of library system and/or library program procedures, services, policies, goals, and objectives .


    • Communication Skills - Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills and displays openness to other people's ideas and thoughts. Responds in a timely , effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate , complete, current, well-organized, legible, concise, neat, and in proper grammatical form.


    • Computer Skills - Experience with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.


    • Creativity - Addresses objectives and problems while questioning traditional assumptions/solutions in order to generate creative ideas and new ways of doing business; exhibits creativity and innovation when contributing to organizational and individual objectives ; seeks out opportunities to improve, streamline, reinvent work processe s


    • Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills - Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

    • Supervision - Sets effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources; provides motivational support; empowers others; assigns decision-making and work functions to others in an appropriate manner to maximize organizational and individual effectiveness.


    • Vision/Strategic Thinking - Supports, promotes, and ensures alignment with the organization’s vision and values; understands how an organization must change in light of internal and external trends and influences; builds a shared vision with others and influences others to translate vision to action.
