OverviewThe District Attorney’s Office for the 8th Judicial District is seeking a dedicated Deputy District Attorney to prosecute motor vehicle theft and related major crimes, including violent and organized offenses involving stolen vehicles. These grant-funded roles are part of a statewide initiative in partnership with the Colorado District Attorney’s Council. They will specialize in auto theft, collaborating closely with law enforcement, victims, and fellow prosecutors.
While based in the 8th Judicial District, these attorneys will also serve the 13th (Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, Yuma, Kit Carson), 14th (Grand, Moffat, Routt), and 19th (Weld) Judicial Districts. The position involves significant travel across these regions to handle cases from investigation through trial and sentencing. In addition to prosecuting cases, these attorneys will support ongoing investigations, help build strong evidentiary cases, and provide training to law enforcement and legal professionals on current auto theft laws and legal standards.

Attorneys in this position can expect a regular Monday through Friday schedule from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some periodic evening and weekend work when required.
This is a grant-funded position through June 2025. The grant may be extended past that time.

- Receives and reviews felony case filing materials, including examining the evidence, witness statements, the nature of the crime, and whether the evidence justifies continued prosecution; and makes independent filing decisions.
- Conducts legal research; prepares reports and develops recommendations related to the District Attorney's Office policies, procedures and operations.
- Represents the County in felony-level criminal calendar proceedings including the scheduling of cases, plea negotiations, probation revocation hearings, motions, and sentencings.
- Serves as prosecuting attorney for jury and court trials.

- The District Attorney's Office seeks an experienced attorney to apply for a Deputy District Attorney III position. An experienced prosecutor with multiple years of prosecution experience will be best suited for this position.
- A Deputy District Attorney III is generally responsible for prosecuting all felony criminal matters. An attorney in a Deputy District Attorney III role is expected to function at an advanced skill level and exercise significant independent discretion and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods. The ideal candidate will have prior experience of handling felony level matters.

Depending on qualifications, this position could be hired as an Deputy District Attorney III or IV.
Deputy District Attorney III - Three years of experience in criminal prosecution, with demonstrated experience handling felony cases.
- Current license to practice law in Colorado or obtain it within two (2) months of hire required.
- DDA I and II attorneys may be considered, or those with criminal defense experience.
Deputy District Attorney IV - Deputy District Attorney IV positions are generally filled by advancement of a Deputy District Attorney III or similarly qualified candidate.
- Equivalent to a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school required.
- Current license to practice law in Colorado, or obtain it within two (2) months of hire required.
