    POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

    The Mechanic II - Golf is a skilled journeyman mechanic position responsible for the maintenance and repair of all golf course maintenance equipment, assist with clubhouse golf cart fleet, tractors, trailers and other related equipment. Work involves servicing and repairing mowers, utility vehicles, PTO driven equipment, tractors, golf carts, a variety of small, hand-held equipment, and other related equipment. Work is performed under the general direction of the Golf Course Superintendent and is assigned orally or through daily, weekly and monthly maintenance schedules. This position may also be required to assist with golf course maintenance and snow removal operations as necessary. This is work of a primarily physically demanding nature.

    The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. The City of Westminster has a Multilingual Stipend Program to encourage and reward benefited employees who are conversationally fluent in languages other than English. Benefited employees have the opportunity to test their language proficiency skills and qualify for a bi-weekly stipend that will vary based on the employee’s level of proficiency and usage.

    • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of:
      • All golf course maintenance equipment
      • Necessary skills to troubleshoot and repair complex hydraulic and electrical systems used on turf equipment
      • Proficient in the use of varied diagnostic tools in determining issues with equipment or golf cart fleet
      • Maintenance of equipment, organizational skills and the ability to utilize a desktop computer in the establishment of a preventative equipment maintenance and inventory control software program
      • Skills necessary to maintain precise cutting units through the use of state-of-the-art grinding equipment and bench setting equipment
      • Equipment operating procedures, people skills, and communication skills to train new employees on preventative maintenance policies, equipment safety and procedures
      • Work safety rules and procedures
    • Demonstrate knowledge of principles and repair methods of internal combustion and diesel engines, transmissions/drivelines and fuel systems
    • Demonstrate skill in interpersonal relations to direct the work of others with positive results
    • Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, subordinates, vendors and other City employees and the public
    • Use different types of welding and fabrication equipment
    • Follow oral and written instructions and accurately fill required forms
    • Read and interpret schematics, service manuals, and manufacturer instructions
    • Grind reels, determine proper bed knife relief angles and reel to bed knife adjustments
    • Operate or learn to operate a wide array of equipment, tractors and utility vehicles


    JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Tasks
    1. Responsible for maintenance and repair of equipment:
    • Planning, organizing, prioritizing and scheduling preventative maintenance and repairs to all golf course maintenance equipment and utility vehicles, and minor repairs to heavy equipment (tractors, dump trailers, PTO driven equipment etc.); major repairs to heavy equipment may be necessary following manufacturer recommendations for service intervals.
    • Coordinating all equipment maintenance activities assuring maintenance and repair needs meet seasonal and operational expectations of the golf course operation
    • Directing part-time/seasonal employees in the preventative maintenance and repair of golf carts, and performs non-routine maintenance and repair on golf carts
    • Performing routine preventative maintenance work such as oil changes and chassis lubrication on all golf course related equipment
    • Grinding, sharpening and adjusting cutting units and blades, and at times directs the completion of this function via full-time or part-time employees
    2. Manages annual budgeted funds through an inventory cost control system assuring adequate equipment repair parts inventory are maintained in relationship to available funding
    3. Fabricates and welds with electric and gas welders and makes cuts with gas torch to tailor-make items unique to a specific job
    4. Uses personal computer-generated program to plan, organize, and schedule preventative maintenance of all golf course equipment
    5. Diagnoses problems as well as repairs or replaces various equipment including:
    • Ability to use manufacturer tools and industry standards in diagnosis such as scanner, code readers etc.
    • Diagnosing problems in electrical, fuel, and hydraulic systems and in various mechanical components
    • Repairing and/or rebuilding engines, transmissions, differentials, drivelines, brakes, gearboxes, hydraulic and fuel systems and related golf course equipment systems and components
    • Repairing and replacing all equipment, utility vehicle and truck tires
    • Performing on course repairs as required in varied weather conditions
    • Replacing non-repairable items such as shocks, tires, bulbs and brake shoes
    6. Maintains regular and punctual attendance

    Other Duties and Responsibilities
    1. Recommends operating budget for golf course equipment repair parts based on an evaluation of existing inventory of supplies and projected needs
    2. Works directly with Golf Course Superintendent to formulate the purchase of equipment on an annual basis
    3. Aids in the training of subordinates in the proper and safe use of mechanical equipment
    4. Assists the Golf Course Superintendent in training new employees in preventative maintenance and equipment operation
    5. Maintains and repairs snow removal equipment
    6. Monitors and places all fuel and lubricant orders
    7. Responsible for ordering of general shop supplies and equipment parts
    8. Test-drives a variety of equipment upon completion or repair
    9. Cleans shop area and equipment/vehicles as necessary
    10. Performs maintenance duties at the discretion of the Golf Course Superintendent
    Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses and Certifications
    Required :
    • High school degree or GED
    • Two (2) years of experience in golf course equipment/turf equipment repair which would include maintenance and repair of heavy equipment such as tractors, mowers and single axle trucks
    • Possesses a valid driver’s license and maintains a safe driving record throughout employment
    Preferred :
    • Some experience in the use of a personal computer to maintain work records and preventative maintenance schedules
    Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered

    Physical Requirements
    Work performed is physical in nature and sufficient physical stamina and strength are needed to:
    • Constantly stand and walk to perform routine maintenance on golf course equipment; Occasionally sit to perform office tasks
    • Frequently squat, bend, kneel, twist, occasionally crawl, climb, balance, and reach overhead and constantly below shoulder to assess and repair vehicles and machinery daily
    • Frequent light/firm grasps, handling and fine manipulation to properly use tools, equipment and perform repairs on small engines
    • Occasional step up/down and actuate mechanism to safely enter/exit and operate golf carts, riding mowers, tractors and vehicles
    • Constant near/far acuity to observe equipment and vehicle for maintenance needs and safety hazards and perform office tasks; Constant hearing to effectively communicate with guests, staff and to be aware of any possible dangers while on golf course
    • Occasional lifting of up to twenty-five (25) pounds from floor to overhead to stock materials, tires, parts, supplies and lower baskets; Occasional lifting of up to eighty (80) pounds from floor to waist and carrying of up to eighty (80) pounds fifteen (15) feet to move supplies and equipment to work site and storage; Occasional pushing/pulling of up to 100 pounds to transport brooms, mowers, push reels and other maintenance supplies and broken equipment and vehicles throughout course to maintenance shop for repair

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Work is constantly performed indoor and occasionally outdoor with constant exposure to extreme weather. This work is performed year-round in the repair shop and in the field under inclement and severe weather and working conditions. Working conditions include close proximity to moving vehicles, mechanical parts, and to heavy equipment. Exposure to exhaust and other fumes, odors, dust, noise, and vibrations does exist. Must be able to drive or learn to drive a wide range of vehicles and equipment with automatic and manual transmissions.

    Required Materials and Equipment
    Hand tools and power tools. Test equipment such as voltmeters, code scanners, accu-gauge, angle locators, reel and bed knife grinders, electric and gas welders, gas cutting torch, hydraulic lifts; personal computer based preventative maintenance; general office equipment, including phone, calculator, two-way radio, computer terminals, photocopier, computer applications, and printers.

    Benefit Package

    The City of Westminster does not participate in the Social Security system. In lieu of Social Security contributions, the city contributes to a 401(a) defined contribution plan on your behalf.

    401(a) Contribution Rates:
    Employee Mandatory Contribution: 11.5% of your base pay. Contributions are pre-tax and fully vested.
    Employer Contribution: 12% of your base pay.

    • Less than 3 years - 0%
    • 3 to 4 years - 60%
    • 4 to 5 years - 80%
    • Over 5 years - 100%
