Nevada County Sheriff's Office is seeking an Accounting Technician. This position will work closely with the Accounting team, the CFO, and the Administrative Services Officer. This is an experienced technical classification in the accounting support area, fully competent under minimal supervision to perform a variety of complex administrative and accounting tasks, including payroll, technical accounting, cost accounting, budget, support grant claims and related work.
An Accounting Technician is an integral part of the County's team whose mission is to support the Sheriff's Office by maintaining accurate records, recording transactions, and balancing accounts. This position is crafted for individuals who have graduated from high school and have two years of experience performing duties comparable to those of Nevada County's classification of Senior Accounting Assistant. No college degree is required but if you have an Associate's degree you only need one year experience as a Senior Accounting Assistant. Do you have your Bachelor's? Examples of DutiesVital duties of this position include:
- Receives, reviews, verifies and processes payroll and accounting records, documentation and related paperwork; reviews and approves payroll, claims, invoices, and associated documents for completeness, accuracy and conformance with policies and procedures; inputs payroll information; may generate payroll warrants
- Applies and implements County policies, MOU provisions, and State and Federal laws and regulations, responds to inquiries from employees and the public, and provides general accounting-related information
- Prepares vouchers for payment of payroll liabilities, including taxes, insurance premiums, retirement contributions and garnishments
- Provides support in the development of department budgets, maintains an accurate accounting of departmental expenditures and allocates expenditures to appropriate ledger accounts
- Computes and Verifies accuracy of charges, collections, special assessments and refunds; processes/authorizes claims for payment
- May prepare or make corrections to secured, unsecured and public utility bills and supplemental tax bills
- Prepares periodic and special reports and correspondence for the county, state and federal agencies
- Ensures accounts are maintained per appropriate laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and bargaining unit agreements
- Sets up and maintains journals, ledgers, controls and related documents
- Performs technical financial or statistical record keeping and review of finan?cial records and operations; generates warrants, vouchers, bills or other accounting documents
- Makes deposits with the Nevada County Treasurer
- Manages credit card and bank statement reconciliations.
Knowledge and Skills RequiredKnowledge of:
- Federal, state and county laws, rules and regulations pertaining to accountability of funds and payroll
- Accounting principles and practices, governmental accounting and budgetary record keeping requirements
- Basic public agency payroll processes, including interpretation of various agreements with employee organizations
- Business data processing and data entry systems relating to accounting technical support work
- Business arithmetic, including percentages, decimals, and basic bookkeeping
- Correct English usage including spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Office methods, practices and procedures
Skill in:
- Performing difficult and complex statistical or record keeping work involving use of considerable amount of judgement, speed and accuracy
- Performing accurate arithmetic calculations and financial reconciliations
- Explaining and applying accounting practices and principles within the guidelines of applicable laws, rules, and regulations
- Preparing clear and concise payroll, financial or statistical statements and reports
- Reviewing and verifying the accuracy of financial data and information and ensuring appropriate authorizations are obtained
- Developing forms, records, systems and procedures
- Directing the work of others
- Operating office equipment including computers, printers, photocopiers, scanners and calculators
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Education and Experience RequiredCriteria 1: Completion of twelfth grade or possession of a GED
AND at least two years of experience at the level equivalent of Nevada County?s classification of Senior Accounting Assistant.
OR Criteria II: Alternately, possession of an Associate degree from an accredited college or university, in accounting, business or related field, plus one year of experience at the level equivalent of Nevada County?s classification of Senior Accounting Assistant is equivalent.
OR Criteria III:A candidate with a Bachelor degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related degree from an accredited college or university is qualifying.
