    Major Duties

    Under general supervision of the Deans and direct supervision of the Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science and Associate Dean of David Nazarian College of Business and Economics, the Graduate Retention and Advising Specialist (GRS) is responsible for improving persistence, retention, reducing time to degree, resolving issues impeding graduation and addressing academic challenges the student facing for graduate students enrolled within CECS and DNCBE. The incumbent will work collaboratively with graduate coordinators, department chairs, faculty, and staff, along with the Assistant VP of Graduate Studies.
    • Maintains a comprehensive working knowledge of both college and university policy, procedures, graduate degree requirements, and resources to provide supplemental academic advisement and service referral information to students.
    • Uses campus data tools to identify caseload and maintains detailed notes on interactions with students using advising management technologies.
    • Participate in both college and university-based events and committees related to student success, retention, and graduation goals including but not limited to involvement in the following: college-based student engagement events, and representing the college at university outreach events, such as CSUN Graduate Fair.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field. Upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job-related, is preferred.
    • Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience; including one year in retention and advising, preferred.
    • Experience with working with multi-cultural/multi-ethnic populations and Direct experience with international student population is highly desirable.
    • A Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, engineering, computer science, business or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.


    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of the Student Services and thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior, and individual counseling techniques. Thorough knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Solid knowledge of SOLAR/EAB/Table programs.
    • Ability to: analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
    • Ability to: interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
    • Must have demonstrated experience working with students in multi-cultural/multi-ethnic populations; students that are historically under-represented, under-prepared, low-income, and first-generation college students. Experience in assessing academic data and conducting analyses. Experience in finding problems and recommending solutions to problems related to retention and graduation.


    Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
    • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver, and more.
    • Classification: Student Services Professional III / 3084 / 1
    • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $5540 - $6001 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $5540 - $7893 per month.
    • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends.
    • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
    • The position is currently hybrid (4 days in office, 1 day remote); however, this is subject to change based on student and/or operational needs.
