    Overview

    Are you looking for an Environmental Health Internship? The Health and Environment Department has an opportunity for a temporary Environmental Health Intern!

    Assignments and work activities will span across multiple programs in Environmental Health. This may include:
    • Conducting inspections and investigations of public and private establishments and other environmental situations to ensure compliance with local and state health and safety codes
    • Assessing health education needs of the community
    • Investigating and implementing health and policy initiatives
    • Assisting in the design, development, implementation, and promotion of health education programs and services

    This is a temporary, paid internship position over the summer months. The typical schedule for this position is 30 - 40 hours per week and would align with County staff during cross training with some flexibility for remote work when working independently on projects.

    Responsibilities

    What you'll be doing:
    • The primary project of the internship will be dependent on the selected candidate’s interests but could be one or more of the following: mapping and field identification activities related to retail food establishments; mapping and documenting large prairie dog colonies to keep track of potential die-offs and land ownership info; testing for blue-green algae/cyanobacteria in response to complaints; and working with commercial operators as part of an equipment swap program to improve air quality.
    • Participates in field inspections and assisting with preparing of reports across all of the Environmental Health programs including potable water systems, waste water systems, retail food establishments, schools, child care facilities, recreation facilities, solid and hazardous waste, and environmental conditions impacting air, water and land that can affect human health due to communicable, zoonotic and chronic disease.
    • Assists in the collection of required samples for investigation of outbreaks and zoonotic disease.

    What we're looking for:
    • Be familiar with general office practices and procedures.
    • Proficiently use routine software and business application including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and databases.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
    • Have regular, predictable attendance.
    • Understand environmental health principles and practices and have the ability to interpret public health needs.
    • Identify, analyze and correct of out of compliance situations in accordance with Division's policies.
    • Operate environmental health equipment including sampling, inspection equipment and inspection software.
    • Develop good time management skills.
    • Multi-task and complete work in a timely manner in a busy work environment.


    Qualifications

    • Sophomore-level coursework in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a related field, required.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Driver's License required.
    • Colorado School of Public Health or Department of Environmental Health student at Colorado State University preferred.
