    About the Opportunity

    The Position
    The Law Enforcement Instructor is responsible for providing instruction in the POST Basic Academy, STC Core training, ongoing POST, STC and County trainings and providing general support for department training activities. This classification is intended or individuals whose primary responsibility is instruction and curriculum development where administrative duties are ancillary.     Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation
    in a 401a program with Nationwide.

    Typical Tasks

    Instruction
    • Provide instruction in various law enforcement course topics including but not limited to First Aid/CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator, Emergency Vehicle Operator, STOP, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Arrest & Control, Hazmat and related Academy or POST/STC annual training;
    • Adhere to the Training Division lesson plans and POST or STC Training & Testing specifications;
    • May develop curriculum, training aids, course objectives and submit for approval;
    • Ensure the safety and welfare of students, assist in evaluating the progress of students and ensures that course objectives are met;
    • Adhere to the Policies & Procedures of the Sheriff’s Regional Training Division;
    • Administer /proctor tests and ensure test security policies are followed and security is maintained;
    • Participate in regular meetings and training sessions to receive updates in adult learning and Training Division practices;
    • Participate in scenarios, etc. for active student learning;
    • Provide all instructional materials to the Academy Coordinator for review prior to instruction;
    • Adhere to the POST mandated certification for Basic Academy Instruction (40-hour course);
    Administrative
    • POST EDI entries and updates.
    • Enter presentations, POST roster entry, and pull POST reports;
    • Update course certifications and instructor resumes;
    • Develop and update expanded course outlines, budget, hourly distributions, lesson plans and resumes;
    • Develop course announcements for website and share to the training network;
    • Processes payments for courses with credit cards, checks and invoices;
    • Agency roster, appointment, compliance analysis;
    • Manage personnel profiles, course attendance, and CPT records;
    • Schedule training dates and reserves classrooms (Gym, classrooms, MPD range and EVOC track);
    • Coordinate the maintenance on the EVOC vehicles; and
    • Perform such other and similar services in connection with any of the above listed services.


    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

    Knowledge
    • Principles, practices, methods, techniques and curriculum in area of teaching;
    • POST/STC procedures;
    • Local law enforcement agency’s training procedures;
    • Recordkeeping;
    • Basic functions of online management of courses;
    • Planning and coordinating projects.

    Skills/Abilities
    • Work with a variety of professionals and the general public;
    • Assist in the development of curriculum and select programs which meet local agency needs;
    • Plans deadlines and keeps staff informed of them;
    • Analyze program needs and recommend changes;
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
    • Be sensitive to and understand the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of trainees;
    • Work with minimum supervision;
    • Operate a personal computer;
    • Communicate over the telephone, email, and in person;
    • Ability to read and write English and write reports.

    Education and Experience

    • Three (3) years prior experience in the area(s) of instruction.


    License or Certificate

    • Some positions may require possession of a certificate of completion from a POST Instructor course (Firearms, Defensive Tactics, etc.), Post Academy Instructor Certificate (AICC), or equivalent meeting criteria under POST PAM 1070
    • Some positions may require certification as a First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor
    • Some position may require completion of a POST Officer Recruit Training Officer Orientation Program

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicant screening will focus on the following desirable qualifications. Please list any of these qualifications you may have within the "Duties" section of the online application.

    • Must be a current contract employee with Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office; and
    • Prior experience working in a law enforcement setting.
    Supplemental Information
    • Must be of good moral character with no felony convictions and must not have been convicted of a crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment in a Federal penitentiary or State prison Possess basic airframe and powerplant tools;
    • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and nights, on occasion, if required;
    • NO suspensions or revocations of licenses;
    • Stoop, bend, crawl, kneel; climb and work on ladders; pull or push 75 pounds and lift up to 50 pounds.

    • Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
    • Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
    • Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months, but may be extended up to eighteen months.
