Under general supervision performs full range of duties in operating construction equipment and driving heavy trucks in the care, maintenance, and repair of streets and parks. Also operates heavy trucks in the collection of solid waste and recycled materials.
This is a 1716 union position. The hours of work are 40 hours per week. Distinguishing Characteristics:
Employees at this level typically work independently, performing a full range of duties operating construction equipment and driving heavy trucks. Serves as lead on work projects and assures that safety regulations and procedures are followed.
The Maintainer Series works across multiple divisions to include:
Streets Division: Performs full range of construction duties in the maintenance and repairs of streets. Operates heavy trucks, hook-lift trucks with various attachments, pay loaders with bucket attachment, backhoe-loaders, power rollers, leaf compost machines, lawn mowers with flair attachment, litter vacuums, and other equipment in construction and renovation projects. Maintains and services equipment and trucks. Performs snow removal and other duties associated with snow and ice control. Follows standard safety procedures and regulations. Performs manual labor as needed.
Parks Division: Performs full range of construction duties in the maintenance and repair of parks, landscapes, street medians, pools, and sport fields. Operates heavy trucks, hook-lift trucks with various attachments, pay loaders with bucket attachment, backhoe-loader, power roller, leaf compost machine, lawn mower with flair attachment, litter vacuums, and other equipment in construction and renovation projects. Maintains and services equipment and trucks. Performs snow removal and other duties associated with snow and ice control. Follows standard safety procedures and regulations. Performs manual labor as needed.
Solid Waste & Recycling: Operates heavy trucks in the collection of solid waste and recycled materials, and oversees and reviews the work of Maintainers as assigned. Operates hook-lift trucks with various attachments, pay loaders with bucket attachment, backhoe-loaders, power rollers, leaf compost machines, lawn mowers with flair attachment, litter vacuums, and other equipment necessary for the collection of solid waste and recycled materials. Follows standard safety procedures and regulations. Performs manual labor as needed.
Blight Remediation Division: Performs full range of maintenance and remediation duties in the maintenance of City-owned properties and the cleanup of blighted properties. Operates heavy trucks, hook-lift trucks with various attachments, pay loaders with bucket attachment, backhoe-loader, power roller, leaf compost machine, lawn mower with flair attachment, litter vacuums, and other small equipment in maintenance and cleanup projects. Maintains and services equipment and trucks. Performs snow removal and other duties associated with snow and ice control. Follows standard safety procedures and regulations. Performs manual labor as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WILL BE INVITED TO ATTEND A PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION FOR THE MAINTAINER III POSITION. A TENTATIVE DATES NOTICE WILL BE SENT VIA EMAIL. The examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained on your application and will include a combination of either a written, oral, or performance test. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination is designed to measure:

- Procedures, materials, equipment and methods either used for road construction, maintenance and repair or parks construction, maintenance and repair.
- Heavy equipment and trucks.
- Safety practices in the operation of heavy equipment and trucks.
- Maintenance and heavy equipment and trucks.

- Operate heavy equipment and trucks.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
- Understand and apply safety standards and procedures.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Work in this class may be performed in a field environment with some travel from site to site and exposure to hazardous traffic conditions. Incumbents may work outdoors as required in all weather conditions; incumbents may be required to wear protective gear; to work with hazardous materials and power equipment; to be exposed to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, and gases; incumbents may be required to lift and carry items weighing 50 pounds; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and be called back to work in accordance with the current contract.
Qualifications Open to all applicants who meet the following qualifications: One (1) year of experience as a Maintainer II (Building Custodian, Laborer, Semi-Skilled Laborer, Lead Custodian, or Sanitation Laborer)
Necessary Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid State of Connecticut Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
with air brake endorsement and medical examiner's certificate.
