    Summary

    Under close supervision, the Recreation Leader facilitates recreation programs, sports, and special events for the public. The position serves as the on-site staff person for assigned programs and/or activities, providing direct leadership and facilitation, including setting up and clearing fields/facilities, overseeing appropriate and safe use of City equipment, assisting with equipment care and inventory, and monitoring proper implementation of activities and programs.

    Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Facilitates and monitors youth and adult recreational programs; ensures proper field use, sets up and clears facilities/fields according to appropriate schedules, and manages effectively any concerns of participants or customers.
    • Engages effectively and communicates positively the department vision, policies, procedures with participants, coaches, spectators, and the general community during all recreation events, sports, and programs.
    • Facilitates mobile recreation programs at various locations throughout the City; plans, schedules, and leads various recreation activities around nature, environment, games, sports, crafts, and other activities for youth.
    • Handles various types of emergency situations in a calm and effective manner.
    • Provides excellent customer service to all participants and members of the public.
    • Provides regular updates and makes recommendations to the Recreation Coordinator regarding program status, participant comments/concerns, and equipment condition.
    • Monitors and enforces the safety rules and policies of each program and park.
    • Inspects and monitors activity/sports areas and equipment; reports any damage, repair, or replacement of equipment that is needed.
    • Assists with recreation programs and events; confirms program/event logistics with participants, vendors, and sports; assist with volunteer programs or events; works with groups on City-led work projects.
    • Performs related duties as assigned.


    Qualifications

    Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
    High school diploma or GED AND two (2) years of experience in customer service, recreation, education, childcare, or sports setting; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of:
    • Principles and practices for organization and facilitation of a variety of recreational activities.
    • Rules and regulations of various team sports.
    • Equipment and field/facility requirements for various recreational activities.
    • Customer service best practices.
    • Principles and practices of standard safety precautions and basic risk management.
    • Basic principles of volunteer engagement and supervision.
    • Basic first aid practices.

    Skill in:
    • Planning, scheduling, and leading recreation activities.
    • Motivating and providing encouragement for participation in recreation programs and team sports.
    • Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
    • Providing high-quality customer service.
    • Handling all types of emergency situations in a calm and effective manner.
    • Addressing all safety and risk management situations proactively.
    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, other City staff, volunteers, and the public.
    • Interacting with others using tact, patience, and respect.
    • Utilizing computer software programs, computers, and office equipment related to area(s) of assignment.
    • Assisting in the supervision of program, special event, and park volunteers.


    If assigned to Nature Camp
    • Plan, lead, and supervise themed fun activities and learning opportunities for a variety of activities to include but not limited to: sports, games, crafts, fitness, environmental, and STEM, for youth 4-12 years of age in an outdoor setting.
    • Supervise Recreation Aides and youth volunteers working with the program.
    • Inspect activity areas and related equipment prior to daily activities and as needed make written reports of damage and recommend maintenance and repair.
    • Enforce safety rules and regulations of the program and the park.
    • Set up and take down equipment (table, chairs, canopy, game equipment), implement activities, and supervise play.
    • Ensure recreation program(s) operate in accordance with general department philosophy, objectives, and guidelines.
    • Keep accurate program records and make periodic reports.
    • Ensure that facilities/fields are properly used and left in good condition.
    • Monitor participants’ behavior to ensure a positive and safe program environment.
    • Build and maintain positive working relationships with other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
    • Update Recreation Coordinator on status of program, participant concerns and equipment.
    • Must be able to react quickly and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
    • Provide minor first aid to recreation program participants as appropriate.
    • Assess the environment for natural hazards and appropriately mitigate any hazards.
    • Perform custodial and/or light maintenance duties.
    • Ability to drive City approved vehicles.
    • Assist with other programs or special events as assigned which may include weekends and evenings.

    If assigned to Rec on the Go
    • Plan, lead, and supervise themed fun activities and learning opportunities for a variety of activities to include but not limited to: sports, games, crafts, fitness, environmental, and STEM, for youth 3-13 years of age in an outdoor setting.
    • Supervise Recreation Aides and youth volunteers working with the program.
    • Inspect activity areas and related equipment prior to daily activities and as needed make written reports of damage, and recommend maintenance and repair.
    • Enforce safety rules and regulations of the program and the park.

    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
    • Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
    • CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification is preferred.
