GENERAL DESCRIPTION NOTE: Internal Posting. Open to TPWD State Park Police Officers employees.
Under the direction of the Region 2 State Park Police Captain, this position performs public safety and resource enforcement work in a state park and surrounding communities and is responsible for performing law enforcement services and coordination of law enforcement activities within the assigned area. Serves as a team leader and assists the Captain with training, recruiting, hiring, mentoring and evaluating of officers. Conducts incident command functions incident, special events, natural or manmade disasters and develops and maintains emergency procedures. Serves as a force multiplier to support public safety and law enforcement actions in the region and assist federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies when called upon or assigned. Responds to emergency situations and is subject to be on-call for service. Partners with and coordinates public safety and law enforcement operations with the park superintendents and other regional staff. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree;
Graduation from the Texas Parks and Wildlife State Park Law Enforcement Academy or Game Warden Training Academy.
Experience: Four years of experience as a Texas State Park Police Officer
Licensure: Must possess a valid class "C" Texas driver's license;
Must be currently commissioned by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department;
Must possess a current license as an Intermediate Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE);
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Instructor's license.
NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon maintaining required licenses.
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS Education: Current TPWD employees may substitute one additional year of commissioned Peace Officer experience, beyond the required four years of Texas State Park Police experience, for 30 semester hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of Texas criminal laws, the code of criminal procedures, the penal code, and Texas Parks and Wildlife rules and regulations;
Knowledge of State Park law enforcement principles;
Knowledge of Law Enforcement Patrol Techniques, Tactics and Procedures;

Knowledge of TCOLE proficiency standards and instructional techniques;

Required to work in a high visitation public park with overnight camping;
Required to reside within 30 air miles of Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park;
Required to work 40 hours per week, including various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;
Required to respond to emergencies and on-call and situations;
Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;
May work in and around natural outdoor pests such as insects, animals and poisonous plants;
Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;
Required to operate State vehicle;
Required to travel 25% with possible overnight stays;
Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
