    The Office of the City Auditor seeks applicants for the Auditor I position:


    • This position is eligible for hybrid-remote work, with a requirement to attend in-person collaboration days twice a month. Residency in Texas is required.

    • The Office of the City Auditor is a City department that reports to the City Council and provides a menu of services including performance audits, investigations, and special request projects.
    • These services are designed to provide information to support the City Council’s decision-making, establish accountability for meeting expectations, and generate a force for positive change. Projects primarily focus on the performance of City departments, programs, and initiatives with emphasis on results/effectiveness and efficiency/economy.

    • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards.
    • Knowledge of performance auditing techniques.
    • Experience auditing municipal government programs/operations for effectiveness/efficiency.


    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Schedules and manages activities for appropriate-level audits and projects. Develops appropriate objective, scope, and methodology for the service that will be provided. Conducts interviews and meetings with external clients to elicit useful, relevant, and reliable information. Collects and analyzes both qualitative and quantitative data, extracting information that is significant to the project. Conducts research on subject matters related to the project. Documents information and conclusions in an organized and useful manner. Uses collected information to support conclusions. Develops clear, concise, timely, and accurate written summaries. Provides timely review and feedback on the work developed by other team members. Develops and delivers informative, clear, and concise presentations. Demonstrates increasing technical proficiency of performance auditing processes, procedures and techniques.

    • Possess and maintain the highest standards of conduct, honesty, and loyalty in both official and personal matters.
    • This position is not responsible for supervising.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Knowledge and ability to adhere to appropriate professional standards, including the Government Auditing Standards.
    • Knowledge of performance audit processes, procedures, and techniques, and the ability to exercise critical thinking and professional judgement.
    • Ability to master steep learning curves regarding government organizations, programs, activities, functions, and, where applicable, their interrelations with the private and not for profit sectors.
    • Ability to solicit, receive, analyze, and use information provided by office staff and external clients and stakeholders.
    • Ability to maintain objectivity and implement appropriate standards of care in all scopes of work.
    • Ability to complete assigned duties and functions in a timely and effective manner.
    • Ability to demonstrate continuous learning and growth by developing a new skill or pursuing a professional certification.
    • Proficient at collecting information according to an established project plan.

    • Ability to identify, obtain and analyze information from a variety of sources, evaluate facts, and employ sound deductive reasoning to draw appropriate conclusions, and where appropriate, make constructive recommendations to ensure compliance of auditing standards.
    • Ability to learn and apply applicable laws, rules, and regulations, including the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Federal Rules of Evidence and Government Auditing Standards.

    City Government

    The City of Austin is a progressive, full-service municipal organization operating under the Council-Manager form of government. Austin has a 10-1 council system with an at-large Mayor and Council Members that represent ten districts. The Mayor and Council Members may serve in their respective seats for four years with a maximum of two consecutive terms. 

    The City Council appoints the City Manager who is the chief administrative and executive officer of the City.
