THE POSITIONPlease Note: a candidate must successfully pass a thorough background investigation, including a criminal history check for job-related convictions, fingerprinting, polygraph test, credit check, and a drug use history to be considered for this position. The Student Trainee class is designed to enable high school and college students to prepare for employment upon graduation. Employment in this class entails a wide variety of fundamental tasks in order to familiarize students with the practical application of academic theory. During the academic term, work hours are normally limited to a maximum of twenty hours per week. During academic vacation periods this work hours limit does not apply and students may work full-time.
This class is distinguished from the Graduate Student Trainee class by the lower level of responsibility which may be assigned to the Student Trainees.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED
Immediate supervision may be provided by higher-level departmental or division administrative personnel. Student Trainees may provide direction and guidance to students participating in a specific program
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDepending upon assignment, typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform a variety of fundamental duties in various divisions of the employing department.
- Provide basic assistance in research projects, special reports, data collection, and programmatic problem-solving.
- Gather, compile, tabulate, and report statistical data.
- Develop and implement trainings for students participating in department specific workshops.
- Acquire working knowledge of department practices, procedures, equipment, and organizational systems.
- Respond to community inquires and complaints.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
- Simple research and statistical methods.
- Basic knowledge of case management methods.

Education:Current academic status in high school or at an accredited college or university as a full-time student
. Upon graduation, or if academic status is no longer active as a full-time student, students are no longer eligible for this classification.

2. Eligibility: (Pass/Fail) - Candidates must meet the following criteria in order to qualify for Student Trainee:
- Proof of full-time enrollment as a college student with at least 12/18 units per semester/quarter (undergraduate) or 6/9 units per semester/quarter (graduate student) must be submitted by time of appointment (hire).
- Two (2) letters of recommendation must be submitted at the time of interview with the Sacramento Police Department .
3. Interview Process: Human Resources will forward qualified applications to the hiring department. All qualified candidates will participate in an oral interview process with an essay portion to be completed during the interview. Essay topics will be provided during the interview. Letters of recommendation will be required at this time .
4. Background Process: If considered for appointment, candidates must pass a background investigation, which includes a criminal history check, fingerprinting, polygraph test, credit check, and drug use history.
