DescriptionTHE AGENCYThe General Services Agency (GSA) is made up of Fleet Services, Facilities, Procurement, Special Services, Security and Business Support, and the Parks Department and is responsible for a broad spectrum of services to all the County departments and agencies. It requires a very diverse workforce to accomplish the GSA mission of contributing to the quality of life in Ventura County by partnering with their customers to provide expertise and cost-effective service delivery, and foster the preservation of natural resources.
THE POSITIONUnder general supervision, performs minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment in the General Services Agency Heavy Equipment Division and performs other related work as required.
The ideal candidate will have some knowledge of heavy equipment and vehicles, the ability to perform minor vehicle maintenance. working knowledge of shop clean up procedures and HazMat storage and labeling, as well as some experience operating a forklift..

WHAT WE OFFER
- Educational Incentive - An educational incentive of 2.5% for completion of an associate's degree, 3.5% for completion of a bachelor's degree, or 5% for completion of a graduate's degree.
- Merit Increases - New employees are eligible for an initial 5% merit increase within the pay range upon completion of at least 1,040 hours (approximately 6 months) assuming work meets satisfactory standards. Subsequent merit increases within the pay range will be upon completion of each additional 2,080 hours (approximately one year) from the initial merit increase.
- Deferred Compensation - Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. If you participate in the County sponsored 401(k) plan, the County will match a part of your contribution up to 3% of your salary, on a per pay period basis. Following five (5) years of continuous County service, an additional 2% non-elective contribution will be made to the 401(k) plan.
- Health Plans - You are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans.
- Flexible Spending Accounts - Pre-tax benefit towards eligible medical, dental and vision care and/or dependent care expenses.
- Pension Plan - Participation in the County's defined benefit pension plan that provides lifetime payments to retirees. Members are "vested" after attaining five years of retirement service credit. If eligible, you may establish reciprocity with other public retirement systems such as CalPERS.
- Holidays - 12 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.

Garage Attendant is represented by the Service Employees International Union, Local 721, and is eligible for overtime compensation.
Examples Of DutiesDuties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Keeps work areas clean.
- Assists Heavy Equipment Service Worker in performing other equipment service functions
- Performs minor mechanical tasks such as replacing radiator hoses and fanbelts.
- Refuels heavy equipment vehicles and cleans vehicles as required.
- Mounts, repairs and balances tires and tubes.
Typical QualificationsThese are the entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on the eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Some experience in automotive services which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. The required knowledge, skills and abilities also can be obtained by demonstrated ability to read, write, communicate effectively and work with simple arithmetic calculations, and a work history which has included some minor vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance, refueling and related work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of:
- the safe operation of vehicles and equipment
- procedures to maintain simple records
Working ability to:
- perform minor maintenance on heavy vehicles and equipment
- establish and maintain effective working relationships
- make entries into a fleet management software program
- operate a forklift
- appropriately label and store Hazmat.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must have some knowledge of Heavy Equipment
- Must possess a California driver license at time of hire.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, twist, and lift heavy
objects. - Must be able to maintain simple records related to work tasks.
HIGHLY DESIRABLEPossession of a California Class A Driver License.
Experience operating a forklift.
Experience labeling and storing Hazmat materials.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE - qualifyingAll applicants are required to complete and submit the questionnaire for this examination at the time of filing. The supplemental questionnaire may be used throughout the examination process to assist in determining each applicant's qualifications and acceptability for the position. WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%An un-proctored, internet-based job-related written examination will be conducted to evaluate participating candidates’ knowledge of motor vehicle operations and safety, following written instructions and general mathematics.
Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
VALIDATING PROCTORED WRITTEN EXAM
Offers of employment may be conditional to the candidate until taking and passing an on- site, proctored exam similar to the un-proctored, internet-based exam. Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies. There is currently one (1) vacant Regular position.
