The Position
Conservation Staff Specialists assist in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures related to areas such as resource management, safety and training, fire management and policy management pertinent to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation and protection.
Under close supervision, incumbents continue to receive training in performing the duties described in the series concept related to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation, and protection. This is the continuing trainee level in the series and incumbents may progress to the next level in the series upon meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. This recruitment is for a Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee 2 underfilling a Conservation Staff Specialist 2 position. The incumbent may auto-progress to the next level in the Conservation Staff Specialist series after meeting the minimum qualifications for the classification and satisfactory performance and endorsement by their appointing authority. This position represents the Nevada Division of State Parks (NDSP) on the Nevada Tahoe Resource Team (NTRT). The NTRT implements Nevada's portion of the Environmental Improvement Program (EIP) to enhance Lake Tahoe's water quality, sustainable recreation, forest health, and wildlife habitats. This position plays a key role in planning and executing sustainable recreation projects in the Tahoe Basin. Conservation Staff Specialists assist in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures related to areas such as resource management, safety and training, fleet and inventory management, fire management and policy management pertinent to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation, and protection. The NTRT Conservation Staff Specialist position requires excellent communication, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, conflict management, adaptability, time management, and organizational skills. Key duties include: collaborate with park supervisors of NDSP's Tahoe Region parks (Cave Rock, Sand Harbor, Spooner Lake and Backcountry, Van Sickle) to identify and address resource concerns; develop and implement park improvement projects to support sustainable recreation; assist in the development of scope of work, funding, planning, and execution of park projects such as trail construction, restoration, and maintenance; participate in Tahoe regional planning projects and coordinate sustainable recreation efforts aligned with EIP goals; lead multidisciplinary teams to enhance recreational opportunities while preserving natural resources; collaborate with federal and local partners to address recreation impacts on Tahoe Basin beaches and lands. This position represents NDSP and NTRT in the public eye and is responsible for developing effective working relationships with a range of private and public partners.
Day to day duties consist of a wide range of professional and technical responsibilities, including: plan, organize, and manage sustainable recreation efforts within the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program; set goals and objectives in alignment with NDSP's mission; analyze issues and develop effective solutions; prepare and justify budget requests; conduct cost and statistical analysis; coordinate and implement training and resource management programs; negotiate contracts, grants, leases, and agreements; interpret and explain technical documents related to assigned programs; communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; build and maintain relationships with federal, state, and local entities, contractors, and other stakeholders in natural resource management and conservation; present information to various audiences; analyze data, identify problem areas, and develop logical solutions; create and manage spreadsheets for data tracking and analysis. *** THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, ecology, environmental studies, environmental science, fire management, forestry, natural resource management, parks management, or related field and one year of professional experience in a relevant resource management field as described above; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Conservation Crew Supervisor II, Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee I, Firefighter II, Fish Hatchery Technician III, or Wildlife Area Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Successful completion of the Research Associate Program through the Great Basin Institute will qualify applicants at the Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee II level. Special Requirements A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation.
