Larimer County Engineering Department offers engaging opportunities for professional development in the field of Civil Engineering. The engineering staff deals with development review, floodplains, stormwater, road and bridge capital improvement projects, traffic engineering, asset management, and land acquisition. Staff also work to support creation and operation of improvement districts for maintenance and repair of neighborhood subdivision roads.
For this job posting, we are seeking to hire a skilled engineer to join our Development Services, Floodplain and Stormwater Group. The team is relatively small and is responsible for a wide variety of duties in coordination with other groups, departments, and customers. The ideal candidate for this position will have a desire to learn, a cooperative attitude, and effective communication and coordination skills. The candidate will also have knowledge of civil engineering design principles and Larimer County road design and stormwater design practices.
The candidate can expect the hiring pay rate to be: CE I is $35.5829-$42.6955 (Hourly), $74,012-$88,815 (Annual). CE II $39.1412-$46.9695 (Hourly), $81,414-$97,696 (Annual).
The standard schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, with 8-hour workdays expected between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. Occasional evening meetings, hearings, and presentations may be required.
ResponsibilitiesWhat you'll be doing:
- Performing engineering and technical reviews of various land use and development proposals for both public and private projects within Larimer County, including providing feedback at concept-level meetings and reviewing construction plans and technical reports prepared by civil engineering consultants for conformance with County engineering policies, design standards, and land use regulations (such as traffic, site layout, grading, road design, stormwater drainage design, and erosion control).
- Reviewing submitted development construction plans, technical reports, utility plans, and design data.
- Reviewing stormwater management plans and reports for compliance with County Stormwater Design Standards and the County Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit program.
- Preparing written comments on development proposals for compliance with existing Larimer County standards and general engineering principles related to site development, street design, stormwater drainage, and other applicable policies, codes, and regulations.
- Writing technical review comments for land use and development proposals and presenting engineering-related county positions at Board of County Commissioner and Planning Commission public meetings and hearings.
- Assisting applicants and working closely with the Community Development Department on a variety of issues.
- Overseeing the construction phase of land development projects and periodically performing on-site inspections of roads, stormwater and water quality infrastructure, floodplain, and other development-related improvements to monitor progress and ensure conformance with approved plans, codes, and standards.
- Serving as a technical resource to the public, consultants, developers, County Boards, County staff, and other stakeholders.
- Researching and responding to citizen inquiries concerning access, drainage, grading, floodplain, or stormwater discharge.
- Assisting in developing, refining, or revising standards, policies, and procedures.

What we're looking for:
- Understanding of civil engineering practices and principles, street design standards, drainage design, and development review processes.
- Proficiency in engineering computations and the ability to read and interpret plats, engineering plans, studies, models, and reports for conformance with County standards and codes.
- Knowledge of specifications, methods, materials, and techniques used in land development and stormwater construction projects.
- Background in stormwater drainage systems and floodplain management.
- Familiarity with local stormwater design standards, such as the Mile High Flood Control District Criteria Manual, and typical hydrologic and hydraulic modeling calculations.
- Clear, concise, and persuasive communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Confidence in presenting information effectively in public settings to County boards, commissions, and diverse community groups.
- Strong ability to prioritize tasks and work both independently and as part of a team without close supervision.
- A cooperative approach to work and a commitment to providing professional customer service to clients and the public.

Civil Engineering I
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent education, from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering required.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire required.
- Engineer-Intern Certification preferred.
Civil Engineering II
- At least three (3) years of experience as a Civil Engineer I in Larimer County, or in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities required.
- Engineer-Intern Certification required.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Colorado preferred.
- Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Civil Engineering or a related field required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Driver's License.
