    Major Duties

    Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant interviews patients as to symptoms and complaints, takes vital signs, performs vision screening and EKG’s, prepares patients for examination by physicians and nurse practitioners, and assists with examinations and treatments. The incumbent cleans and autoclaves equipment and instruments, cleans and stocks patient care rooms, and assists physicians, NP's, and RN's as assigned.
    • Administers medications or immunizations by intramuscular, intradermal, subcutaneous, or by inhalation, orally, sublingually, or etc., and performs TB skin tests, measures and describes results, and refers for interpretation.
    • Performs peak flow testing and spirometry, removal of bandages, casts, and splints, ear lavage, throat cultures, and specimen collection by non-invasive techniques.
    • Assists physicians and Nurse Practitioners with all procedures, treatments, and minor surgeries, completes physicals and gynecological examinations, stocks patient care areas with supplies and linen, and cleans exam tables, exam lights, equipment and instruments.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    • A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Equivalent to one year of full-time, increasingly responsible medical assistant experience.
    • Possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited and approved program for Medical Assistant training through the Department of Education or the Bureau of Private Post-secondary and Vocational Education within the Department of Consumer Affairs in California.
    • If performing phlebotomy outside the regular scope of practice, appropriate phlebotomy certification may be required by the State of California.


    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Thorough knowledge of nursing care principles and practices, and of basic medications and their effects. Working knowledge of the uses, application, and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties described above. Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to the duties assigned; working knowledge of California laws and regulations pertaining to medical assistants.
    • Ability and specialized skills to: quickly learn related clinic procedures; handle equipment required for patient care in a Student Health Center; make accurate observations and exercise correct judgment within the areas of assigned responsibility; follow detailed oral and written instructions.
    • Understand basic medical terminology and exercise good nursing practice; establish cooperative relationships with students, physicians, nurse practitioners, and co-workers; be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients; and observe and record observations.
    • Operate EKG, Ear Irrigator, Autoclave, computers and software. Familiarity with Point and Click /or Electronic Health Records preferred.


    Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
    • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
    • Classification: 8148 / Medical Assistant / 1
    • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $3680 - $4419 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $3680 - $5916 per month.
    • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends.
    • This is a Temporary position; end date to be determined.


    General Information

    • This position is a sensitive position as designated by the CSU. The selected candidate must pass a fingerprint clearance (LiveScan).

    • The Student Health Center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. and as such, will recommend certain vaccinations or screenings free of charge for the successful candidate.
    • The person holding this position may be considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
