OVERVIEW KITSAP COUNTY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Kitsap County supports internship programs that provide work experience for students in an accredited post-secondary institution that is related to their course of study. The internship program is designed so that the student will have the opportunity to apply principals and theories learned in the classroom, gain new skills, explore a career path and be supervised and mentored by a professional in their field.
The Sewer Utility division has an opportunity for a summer intern to grow and develop their skill set in the Mechanical/Civil Engineering field at Kitsap County's 4 Wastewater Treatment Plants! The successful intern will learn to assist with a variety of tasks associated with operation and maintenance the County's four wastewater treatment plants and 60 associated pumping stations, as well as a variety of entry level construction management and engineering assignments.
- Term of internship: Begins approximately May/June and may go through the end of September.
- Paid internship, 40 hours per week.
- Applications will be reviewed in the week of April 7th.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR PERFORMANCE OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSMinimum Qualifications :
- Must be able to show proof of enrollment in a post-secondary institution at the time of internship. If the internship occurs during the summer, the student may provide proof of summer or fall enrollment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineering mathematics applicable to area of assignment.
- Basic ability to understand and interpret engineering plans, maps, specifications, drafting terminology and symbols.
- Ability to conduct research and gather data efficiently in a reasonably logical manner.
- Perform basic computer operations using MS Office Suite and SharePoint.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Work successfully within the context of a team environment.
Desired Majors and Class Level - Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering
- Sophomore(2Y) - Senior(4Y)
Knowledge and Abilities To Obtain Over the Course of the Internship: Increase Intern Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of:- Learn structure of an asset management system and basic knowledge of CMMS functionality.
- Interpretation of engineering drawings and specifications.
- Identification of field equipment and function.
- Interpret manuals and other documents to determine operations and maintenance requirements.
- Be an active participant in meetings.
- Work with staff to understand system operations and construction.
- Identify process improvements for system optimization.
SUPERVISION - Intern will receive supervision from an administrative superior as assigned.
- Work is performed in accordance with established policies and accepted practices.
- Work is reviewed through status reports, meeting and observations.
Driving Requirements: - The successful incumbent must meet the driving requirements of this position and submit a copy a current driving record/abstract (from state of residency) to review for eligibility to drive for Kitsap County prior to employment. The successful incumbent must obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record as outlined in the Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE OF DUTIES- Assist in reviewing engineering plans, specifications, and reports for sewer system projects.
- Conduct research and compile data for system improvements and maintenance projects.
- Use GIS and CAD software to update sewer system maps and drawings.
- Support hydraulic modeling and system capacity evaluations.
Project Management Assistance- Help track progress on capital improvement projects.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and documentation for engineering and management staff.
- Assist in construction site visits and inspections under the supervision of senior engineers.
- Collect and organize project data for grant applications and funding reports.
Asset Management & System Analysis- Assist in maintaining and updating the asset management database.
- Conduct field assessments of sewer infrastructure, including manholes, pump stations, and pipelines.
- Support condition assessments by reviewing CCTV sewer inspection footage.
- Regulatory Compliance & Environmental Review
- Research local, state, and federal regulations related to wastewater infrastructure.
- Assist with permit applications and compliance documentation.
- Review environmental reports and coordinate with regulatory agencies as needed.
Operations & Maintenance Support- Work with utility staff to understand sewer system operations, including treatment plants, lift stations, and collection systems.
- Assist in data analysis related to sewer system performance and maintenance trends.
- Help develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for engineering-related tasks.
Administrative & Miscellaneous Tasks- Support public outreach efforts, such as creating educational materials about sewer system maintenance.
- Attend internal and external meetings with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the Sewer Utility and Public Works department.
